Sarana Ceremony

As part of our Centennial events, members received their Buddhist names. This ceremony is called Sarana. It is a short form of tri-sarana. The purpose of the ceremony is to function as a personal expression of an individual's wish to confirm and deepen his or her commitment to the Buddhist path. Individuals are given special names for this occasion and everyone receives the first name Shakya along with the chosen. Shakya is the name of Buddha's tribe. Everyone who receives a Buddhist name belongs to the same tribe.

Centennial Service

The Visalia Buddhist Temple celebrated 100 years of service November 3 and 4, 2007. Kicking off the event was a Chigo Parade. We also held a Sarana Ceremony, which is the presenting of Buddhist names by the Socho of Buddhist Churches of America. The Centennial Celebration was presided over by 9 visiting priests. A banquet at Holiday Inn followed.

Ministerial Assistants

The Socho of the Buddhist Churches of America certified Shoren Ellen Tanimoto and Hoyu Octavio Gamboa as Minister's Assistants on May 11, 2008, granting the honor of conducting regular services, delivering Dharma Talks, and conducting other appropriate religious activities under the direction and at the discretion of the resident minister.
