West 124 St. Community Garden

The West 124th Street Community Garden needed picnic tables, benches, a tool shed, and a shelter structure with a rainwater-harvesting system. Students built the furniture using reclaimed wood. Instead of using wooden rafters to support the roof of the shelter, they assembled a metal frame built using pieces of a discarded Broadway show set, and then secured the wooden stringers to the metal frame using traditional Japanese lashing techniques.

Bronx River Crossing

With a grant from the Van Alen Institute Fellowship for Public Architecture, architects Amanda Schachter and Alex Levi created the Bronx River Crossing project. They paired several high school groups, including Urban Workshop, with groups of college students, and together all the students built a model of the Bronx River Watershed -- using found objects from the watershed area. Later, the model was mounted on a raft and towed down the Bronx River by a fleet of canoes.

Rebuilders Source 2009

In the spring of 2008, Urban Workshop students from I.C.E. built a number of large, industrial shelving units in a warehouse in the South Bronx to help ReBuilders Source launch their cooperative business selling reclaimed construction materials. In the spring of 2009, Urban Workshop returned to ReBuilders Source, this time with students from Lyons Community School. The students cannibalized a theater set from a closed Broadway show, and then used the reclaimed wood to build more shelving units -- to organize and display large marble slabs and other items for sale at ReBuilders Source.

UW Mentors

In the Urban Workshop Mentors Program, high school students from UW were paid to stay afterschool and mentor middle school students from Lyons Community School. The older students worked with their sixth- and seventh-grade menteer on homework and carpentry projects, teaching the younger students academic and hands-on skills.

Over the past year or so, Bronx Green-Up (from the NY Botanical Gardens) had been helping this school for disabled and autistic children to create a garden in an empty lot across from the school. Our student team came to the garden to build benches and tables for classes to take place in the garden, and a wooden walkway (using recycled materials from ReBuilders Source) to make the garden accessible for the school’s many disabled students.

Lyons Community School

Urban Workshop spends the majority of the year working on construction projects in communities across the city. During January, however, our team focused closer to home: working on projects requested by teachers in our own school. Students built benches for our social workers, bookshelves and closets for classrooms, movable walls for the Moving Room, and a variety of other classroom furniture pieces.

A Better Community Garden

This Brooklyn community garden needed a shelter structure for gardeners and community members to gather in the shade. Our student team dug a foundation for the large structure, built it, and then used scrap lumber to create benches and tables for the shelter area.

South 4th Street Garden

In September 2008, City Council Member Diana Reyna asked our team to help with the renovation of a formerly-abandoned lot in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Young people from the neighborhood had already worked to beautify the lot with murals, garden planters, and a stage. All they needed now was picnic tables and benches so that the new garden could play host to a variety of community functions, including parties, picnics, performances, school visits, and some highly-touted domino competitions.

Summer Project Week 2008

In July 2008, a team of student volunteers from the Institute for Collaborative Education and Lyons Community School returned to United Herkimer Garden in the Bed-Stuy section of Brooklyn. All of the things we built there last year were holding up fantastically. However, the garden members desperately needed us to build one more structure: a tool shed. We built it over the course of a week, using about 50% salvaged/reclaimed construction materials from ReBuilders Source.

Rebuilders 2008

In February 2008, our student team began working on construction projects in a South Bronx warehouse that was becoming home to ReBuilders Source, an innovative, new worker-owned cooperative selling recycled building materials. Over several months, as the business prepared to open its doors for the first time, the students built industrial shelving units to organize and display the recycled products for sale at the store.
