My stitched piece and a lining fabric
The lining fabric approx 2.5cm wider all around than the stitched piece. Iron on interfacing either on the stitched piece or the lining fabric. I find that I prefer to have the interface on the lining fabric. It's easier to turn it over inside out. Here shown on the wrong side of the stitched piece.
Match the edge of the fabrics wrong sided together. You may trim the edge of the lining fabric to determine the width of lining fabric. Machine or handstitch both the long side of both fabric about 0.5cm from the edge.
Turn inside out and press the sides. This will give you an opening on both ends.
Fold twice of the lining fabric to give a nice even binding on both ends.
First fold
Second fold and stitch in place.
Machine stitched close the the edge of the lining fabric
To make a neat & strong closure on the sides of the mailart, I normally use a hand quilting thread with a sharp sewing needle.
Ladder stitch
I apply ladder stitch or whip stitch all around the mailart except the opening. It will give a nice finish.
Almost done.
Add any button, snapper, ribbon or iron velcro to the flaps and also I will add few stitches with normal threads to secure the closure until it reach my addressee safely.
