As is traditional in Kenya, before the foundations are dug, a ceremony is held to bless the work.
The foundations are dug
All the materials are already on site.
Foundations go in quickly
Followed by the floors
Bricklaying can then get underway
It doesn't take long for walls to go up for one classroom
especially when there are only 3 walls to build
one day to get this far
Here you can see the reinforced concrete beams being moulded. A wooden mold is made which is filled with concrete and gravel.
The reinforced ring around the top - ringbeam - is next to go on.
Just a few more layers of bricks before the roof can go on.
It took 7 days from the floors being laid to get this far
It's a bit of shell but if it had a roof they'd use it for teaching!
Fortunately not only will we put a roof on it, we'll put in doors and window frames, plaster and paint to complete it nicely....
So, here's the roof in place, awaiting external plastering
