C.J. Chappell, son of Genora Chappell of Puyallup (left) marches around the circle of numbered blocks followed by Havanna, daughter of Rachael Solheim. The two children are best of friends and each won a cake in separate Cake-Walk events. In the background, marching right along with the kids is Police Chief Larry Saunders shouting encouragement for livelier dancing and cheering. Saunders did not win a cake in spite of participating in dozens of go-rounds. Photo by Ed Kane, Freelance Graphics.

A very distasteful occurrence witnessed three times by this photographer during the event was attendees allowing their dogs to relieve themselves within the populated area of the festival and not cleaning it up. It was the same area walked by festival goers and children playing a variety of games. Perhaps a change next year will either prohibit pets in the festival area or at least place a number of A-frame signs warning pet owners to take responsibility for their pets’ needs or face penalties.
