An image that stays because it was my first, right out of Amsterdam central station.
Amsterdam’s Royal Palace at night.
This image, for me, epitomizes the quirky spirit of Amsterdam's architecture.
Further epitomes as you zoom in: there’s the ubiquitous coffeeshop sandwiched in between the two larger buildings :)
The beautiful Museumplein has a park set between the National Museum, the Van Gogh museum and the Concertgebouw (“Concert Building”). During the day, the park’s street artists and people-watching rivals any in Amsterdam.
A pizzeria at a street corner, pretty as a picture.
Streets of tourist-friendly Leidseplein.
Mick Jagger is quite the legend here
Gathering around to watch a street artist perform in Leidseplein.
The beautiful Amstel river, through the Oost ("West") part of the city.
Graffiti in the immigrant-strong Surinameplein neighbourhood of Amsterdam.
When they say weed is everywhere in Amsterdam, they mean everywhere. Remnants of the work of a guy rolling a joint on the train we were taking to a suburb. Funnily, more than once, they're then standing patiently at the ready, joint between lips, as they’re exiting the train, to light up on the platform as soon as they get off. :)
Your Amsterdam experience isn’t complete, of course, if you haven’t had a couple of close shaves with a tram hurtling down at you (and a couple of speeding bicycles thrown in for good measure).
In the middle of a bridge, this guitar-and-harmonica man had the perfect spot under the sun. Behind him are the stalls of a flea market that sold an amazing array of stuff... old records, weird coffee-table books, marijuana accessories of all kinds...
The Organ at the Westerkerk
Johnny Jordaan is revered – he’s among the most loved musicians in the Netherlands. They have a street named after him, but better than that, these busts stand in the centre.
The wonderful Concertgebouw (“Concert Hall”) in Amsterdam hosts free lunch-time concerts every Wednesday.
And posters Everywhere....
