Bibra Lake - 4 April 2008
Bibra Lake is in serious trouble in 2008. The water table has been lowered through excessive bore usage, initially by nearby industries and then domestic dwellings. Nutrients leach into the lake from the southern end where a past 1970s landfill site was established to dispose of rotting sheepskins from industrial processors. The former wetland is testimony to mismanagement by a succession of local and state governments. The moat on the perimeter is artificial. In the late 1950s when I was a teenager I used to ride my bike out to the western side of the lake where these pictures were taken. In those days the lake was surrounded by reeds and bushland. There was no moat, no cultivated picnic areas, no landfill site, and the lake was always full of clear water. It supported a rich diversity of avian and aquatic life.
