Cusco

We took a train to Cusco, where Sue left us. Mike and I explored the city, then headed up the Sacred Valley, to return in time for the Christmas celebration of everyone in the plazas.

Machu Picchu and Sacred Valley

We took an hour taxi ride for $9 to Ollantaytambo, and arrived just before the Christmas give-away from the train employees to the village children. We spent the day in Ollanta, visiting some non-commericialized ruins, exploring the city that has been inhabited since the 13th century, and hanging out at a restaurant. We took the train (only option) to Aguas Calientes, took a bus up to the famed Macchu Picchu, spent time up there, returned for another night in Aguas Calientes, and took another taxi to Pisac, then a bus back to Cusco.

Puno and Lago Titicaca

We left Cajamarca via a fancy double decker bus and arrived to Lima. We spent the day with Trevor and Scott, went to meeting in Lima, then left on an airplane for Jualiaca to get to Puno and Lake Titicaca. We found a nice hotel for $10 per night, explored the town, and went on a tour boat to the islands. We also spent time just breathing, as the oxygen at about 13,000 feet isn't so plentiful.

Cajamarca

After a couple of day in the mountains, we scrambled to find a taxi to take us to Chota in order to not miss our 9am bus to Cajamarca. A toyota station wagon piled in nine people to get us down just before 9am. After another death defying bus ride, we arrived at Cajamarca and stayed at Mike and Melindas (not present) with Roger and Jason. We enjoyed hot water showers, Los Banos, and seeing the sites of this mountain town that is prospering because of a nearby mine.

Chota and the mountains

We left Trujillo at night for a 12 hour bone-jarring single lane dirt road bus trip. We arrived a bit early in Chota (at 4 in the morning) and slept on the bus until 6, when some of the workers and friends came to meet us and fed us breakfast. We then loaded up in a toyota pickup and headed up into the mountains to stay a couple of nights where running water, electricity, and indoor plumbings are not too common, but hospitality and friendliness is heart warming.

Lima, Trujillo, Cajamarca

Peru 2006. Mike and I met Jonny, Deb, Dorrie, Chel, and Theron in Seattle for dinner and delivered Deb's new car. We stayed the night and left at 8:30am to arrive in Peru before midnight (3 hour time jump.) After staying the night at some one of the friends, we took a nine hour bus road to Trujillo, stayed the night, and then took a 4 hour bus ride to Cajamarca, where we stayed in the sisters' batch.
