Ångermyran, Älvdalen Sveaskog

A 40 hectare logging plan by Sveaskog in a dry pine dominated old-growth forest area in Älvdalen commune, northern Dalarna. More than 50 localities of red-listed old-growth forest fungus species were found during a short field check by Naturskyddsföreningen including three EN-species and one new species new to Dalarna county. Old-growth forest destruction in Sweden 2008: A 30 hectare woodland key habitat about to be clearcut. This beautiful virgin spruce forest was defined as Woodland key habitat (nyckelbiotop) by the Skogstyrelsen. Now the same authorities have given permission to clearcut it. Larger woodland key habitats are in great risk of being logged but they are too small to be protected as nature reserves. For valuable areas this size there are practically very little possibilities to be protected = yet another absurdity in Swedish nature protection policy. All photos © Olli Manninen

Sundberget, Storuman

A 200 hectare old-growth forest that forest company Sveaskog has sold to a private person for logging. It is a high quality old-growth forest area with a lot of geological and botanical variation. On a field visit on 11.8.2008 by Naturskyddsföreningen more than 150 localities of at least 20 different red-listed species were found. The whole forest was acutely threatened to be logged, now in 2009 some parts of it are voluntarily set aside for now. Sveaskog is currently FSC-certified in Sweden. All photos © Olli Manninen

An old-growth forest near Idre that was threatened by windmill park and further "development". Windmill companies in Sweden tend to plan their production very eagarly to the areas with the highest natural values. Wind power is being used as a just another excuse to exploit the few intact nature areas left in modern Sweden. The area is owned by the state-owned forest company Sveaskog. Now in 2009 the area has, after persistent local campaigning from NGOs, decided to become a nature reserve and the wind power plans have been withdrawn. All photos © Olli Manninen

An unprotected old-growth forest area owned by the Malung municipality in Dalarna county. It is not defined as a woodland key habitat by the authorities and is in risk of being logged any time now. In northern and western Sweden old-growth forests are being logged all the time as the government doesn't have a plan how to protect them. Bergvik has more than 500 hectares of acute logging plans around the lakes Stor-Flaten and Stora Snesen which are about to destroy practically all the remaining valuable forests of the area. Kaddevaara, Gällivare Sveaskog

Old-growth forest area in Gällivare, Sweden that was to be clear-cut by forest company Sveaskog in 2008. Several red-listed old-growth forest species were found on a short field visit by Greenpeace including the critically endangered (CR) wood-inhabiting fungus Antrodia crassa. Old-growth pine trees at the area may well be over 500 years old. Smaller undergrowth trees that Sveaskog has already partly felled are also up to 150 years old! The area is now in 2010 marked as a voluntary set-aside area by Sveaskog but is still lacking formal protection. Sveaskog is currently FSC-certified in Sweden. All photos © Olli Manninen

Another SCA logging plan in a Swedish old-growth forest. A planned 20 hectare clearcut in an old-growth pine habitat with high biodiversity values. Only 3,2% of productive forest land in Swden is protected and the destruction of last remaining unprotected old-growth patches continues causing rapid forest biodiversity decline. Sweden is all the time brutally breaking its commitments to preserve biodiverity. Forest company SCA is also currently FSC-certified. A beautiful old-growth forest area in Gällivare commune, Sweden that forest company SCA is about to exploit soon. Ancient slowly grown pine trees at the area are up to 500 years of age. Low grade of old selective loggings and a good continuum of coarse dead wood make this area rich in old-growth forest biodiversity. SCA has already fragmented the larger area and is further going to clearcut almost 100 hectares soon to be used pulp and sawn goods. SCA is currently FSC-certified in Sweden. A pine-dominated old-growth forest area in Boden, Norrbotten. Forest company Sveaskog was logging Jacksberget in june 2008 despite its obviously high conservation value. On the fresh clearcut area more than 20 localities of red-listed species were found on a short field visit by Greenpeace. For example endangered fungus Antrodia infirma (EN) was found at the logging site on a pine log run over by harvester. Old-growth forest area near Byvattnet, Strömsund that Swedish forest company SCA was about to clearcut in 2008. It is a part of several thousand hectare unprotected mountainous forest area SCA is deliberately fragmenting despite its extremely high natural values. On a short field visit a total of 20 different red-listed and numerous old-growth forest indicator species were found in the forests planned to be logged. SCA is currently FSC-certified in Sweden.
