Skärsjöskogen, Härryda

Skärsjöskogen is an exeptionally well preserved large tract of High Conservation Value Forest 15 km from Göteborg. The whole area is more than 1000 hectares in size. The area is privately owned and it is now threatened by exploitation. There are plans to make extensive loggings in the area and to build golf courses and other "developement". Timmeråsarna, Smedjebacken Sveaskog

Nature conservation in Sweden 2009: State-owned forestry company Sveaskog is going to clearcut old-growth forest in a area called "Malingsbro-Klotens Nature Conservation area". This 40 hectare area has mainained surprisingly many natural elements in a rather heavily exploited Southern Dalecarlia and is therefore very valuable for forest biodiversity. Many of the dominating trees are 200 years of old or more, even the thin undergrowth trees that Sveaskog has already felled to make room for the clearcut are well over 100 years old. Skräddarmyren, Älvdalen Sveaskog

State-owned forest company Sveaskog has been logging the old-growth forests by the Pitlokarna nature reserve in the summer 2009. More than 100 hectares of clear-cuts was planned bordering the reserve. The forests planned for exploitation share the same old-growth elements and the same history as the reserve and have very high biodiversity values. The destruction of old-growth pine forests is continuing in horrifying speed as the protection planning has been concentrating on spruce forests. This means a catastrophe for pine forest biodiversity in Sweden if an urgent protection programme is not started soon. Sveaskog is currently FSC-certified in Sweden. Granåsen W, Älvdalen Sveaskog

Old-growth forest clearcut in Älvdalen, Dalarna by state owned forest company Sveaskog. This low-productive pine forest area was totally untouched by modern forestry until the exploitation in 2009. Very many of the trees logged were 200-300 years old and carried visible marks by old forest fires. Numerous localities of red-listed old-growth forest fungus and lichen species were found from the logging site now totally unsuitable for their survival. An acutely threatened forest area NE from Särna with exeptionally high pine forest biodiversity values. State-owned forest company Sveaskog is planning to clearcut the area and obviously has not made any nature inventories at all before planning the logging operations. On their 4-hour field visit the amateur inventory group by Naturskyddsföreningen found more than 200 localities of 14 red-listed species from the 50 hectare planned logging area. Sörälven S, Älvdalen Sveaskog

Twenty hectares of old-growth forest slated for logging by Sveaskog west from Idre. This beautiful forest area is situated next to Sörälven river surrounded by untouched mire ecosystems. Forests next to the river have been untouched by modern forestry until now and have very good old-growth structures left despite some old selective harvestings. Sveaskog is now committed to destroy the natural values here, obviously without any nature or biodiversity inventories. Activists of Naturskyddsföreningen briefly visited the area in august 2009 and found very richly threatened old-growth forest species on the site. Sveaskog is currently FSC-certified in Sweden. Drevdagen E, Älvdalen Sveaskog

North of the mighty Drevfjällen Nature Reserve the State-owned forest company Sveaskog is planning large new loggings. These forests are bordering the reserve and belong integrally to the Drevfjällen old-growth forest massive. Drevfjällen is one of the few Intact Forest Landscapes of Sweden and in whole western Europe. The planned loggings are partly also fragmenting the IFL-area. These old pine forests have also great social and economical importance for the village next to them as the recreation of the villagers and tourism business they are practicing is dependent on them. Forests bordering the Långfjället Narure Reserve have faced some heavy disturbance under the last few years. State-owned forest company Sveaskog is systematically trashing the forests by rather "traditional" clear-cuts. In 2007/8 Sveaskog made a brutal logging sweeping the forest away almost 1km along the border of the Nature Reserve. Sveaskog is currently FSC-certified in Sweden. Björnklinkåsen, Älvdalen Sveaskog

Björnklinkåsen is a beautiful, low-productive old-growth forest area right next to Städjan-Nipfjellet Nature Reserve. State-owned forest company Sveaskog was planning to log 35 hectares of this extremely valuable old-growth forest area in 2009. With a one-day field visit to the planned logging site the activists of SSNC found an amazing amount of 200 occurences of 18 different red-listed species together with numerous other old-growth dwelling species. Three of the species are classified EN (Endangered) and one CR (critically endangered). Despite the overwhelming evidence of the natural values (which Sveaskog failed to notice from the beginning) Sveaskog was still in march 2010 committed to clear-cut the area -an unpleasant fact for those who thought the company is honestly doing its best with biodiversity conservation. In april 2010 Sveaskog announced that the area is becoming a voluntary set-aside for now. Sveaskog is currently FSC-certified in Sweden. All photos © Olli Manninen

An old-growth pine forest area forest company SCA started logging in 4. aug 2009 near the Helvetesbrännan Nature Reserve. Naturskyddsföreningen visited the area and reported very high biodiversity values in the whole area SCA had ignored. After contacting the company the logging was halted temporarily. This example is unfortunately very typical in many parts of Sweden: the companies are systematically logging High Conservation Value Forests without even trying to find out the natural values before logging. Stor-Brinnsjön W, Krokom SCA

Here at Stor-Brinnsjön we have a typical example of old-growth forest destruction in Sweden today. Forest company SCA was about to clearcut more than 150 hectares of this biologically very valuable old-growth pine forests between the lakes Hotagen and Stor-Brinnsjön in summer 2009. An amazing amount of about 300 records of 21 different red-listed species were made during a field visit by Naturskyddsföreningen. In addition to the very high old-growth forest values there is a nowadays very rare fresh large natural windfall also within area. Now in 2010 it seems that the logging plans will be withdrawn and the area is going to be set aside as a woodland key habitat. Without the heavy voluntary work done by the inventory group and pressure from SSNC this forest would have very likely already been logged by now. Photos © Olli Manninen & Sini Saarela
