Dritrännskogen (Rälldalshäden), Älvdalen FV

This slope with humid old spruce forest is a part of the unprotected Rälldalshäden forest massive in Northern Älvdalen. The 3000 hectare old-growth forest area is owned by the Swedish state and governed by the military. This particular forest patch is propably one of the most culturally influenced parts of the whole area (due to old cultural history around the mountain cabin). Still it is already very rich in old-growth forest biodiversity and the forest structure is returning to it's natural state. These forests might also be soon in danger as the military is planning more and more logging activities in the area. Photos © Olli Manninen

Kull (Storvarden), Älvdalen FV

This steep slope with old-growth spruce forest is a part of a large unprotected intact submontane forest landscape Storvarden in Northern Älvdalen. The whole Storvarden area is about 7000 hectares in size. It is state-owned and is governed by the military. In the N Älvdalen military area there is now a new boom of clearcut logging and this beautiful area is in danger too. Parts of the area in south are already been logged and fragmented in 2011. Gråvalen, Krokom

A large subalpine old-growth forest area in Northern Jämtland that is being fragmented by loggings. Almost all the somewhat productive parts seem to be planned for loggings, very few woodland key habitats have been registered. Sawmill Ocke Ångsåg in Åre owns most of the area, smaller parts are privately owned. Both Ocke Ångsåg and private owners have clearcut considerable parts of the area in 2009. Almost one hundred hectares of high-quality old-growth forests slated for logging directly bordering the Tandövarden nature reserve in Malung. Lima forest commons own this forest as many other equally valuable areas. Swedish Governments' nature protection policy is deliberately neglecting most of the private and company owned high Conservation Value Forests and letting them be trashed for pulp and paper. Landowner, forest company SCA is about to clearcut the southern part or the area any day now. Most of the photos are from the planned logging site. SCA is certified by FSC in Sweden. Skärsundnäset, Ånge SCA

A beautiful old-growth forest in Västernorrland, Sweden about to be exploited by forest company SCA. SCA is systematically logging the last remaining unprotected old-growth forest areas in Ånge area. This 30 hectare planned logging site is a typical example of the nature values SCA is continuously destroying. SCA is certified by FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) in Sweden. FSC is supposed to promote ecologically sustainable forestry practises. In Sweden AD 2008 this is unfortunately not the case. This forest is now admitted to be clearcut by SCA in 2008 despite the knowledge of the high natural values and numerous occurences of red-listed species. All photos © Olli Manninen

Juån, Ånge SCA

Old-growth forest in Västernorrland SCA was clearcutting when the SSNC inventory group visited the area. With a short field visit more than 110 localities of 12 red-listed species were found from the remaining parts. Stora Säxen, Vansbro

A biologically very valuable old-growth pine forest in Central Sweden acutely threatened to be clearcut. Bergvik Skog (Stora Enso) had already marked 120 hectares of the forest to be logged and built a new forest road through the area. On a short field visit 3rd of may 2008 13 different red listed species were found from the area as well as numerous old-growth forest indicator species. Even more was found a week later on a similar field visit. After Swedish forestry agency visited the area and confirmed the high natural values Stora Enso has now marked parts of the area as voluntary set-asides. This forest had much better luck than most of the old-growth forests Bergvik is governing but still no protection decisions have been made. Luongastunturi N, Kiruna Svea

Northern parts of a large extremely valuable unprotected submontane state-owned old-growth forest area in Kiruna. The whole area is now acutely threatened by massive vindpower construction and other exploitation. The whole 14000 hectare area is prioritized for protection by the county board but Sveaskog that governs the area has rejected the protection plans and is very positive to windpower exploitation. Now 70 huge windmills and 40 kilometres of roads are planned to the area and there are no protected or set aside areas at all. Sveaskog is currently FSC-certified in Sweden. Wind power is ironically becoming the biggest threat to intact forest nature in many parts of Sweden as the planning goes on wildly deliberately neglecting the possible natural values at the sites. A state-owned forest area prioritized for protection by the county board in 2004. Sveaskog that governs the area declared that the area will be included in a future "Ekopark" Rautiorova. As a part of the Ekopark scheme there were extensive plans for wind power exploitation in the area. After persistent resistance by the local people and SSNC Norrbotten the wind power plans have now been withdrawn. In the Ekopark management plan there are no loggings planned either so for now this beautiful area is rescued from exploitation. All photos © Olli Manninen

Sväggejaurberget, Arjeplog

An unprotected submontane forest area near Arjeplog. This state-owned area is managed by Sveaskog. There are no protection plans or set aside areas here and Sveaskog has already allowed a car testing track and a dump built here. Sveaskog does not usually do logging in submontane old-growth forests but they are often very open to other means of exploitation. Sveaskog is currently FSC-certified in Sweden. Small unprotected old-growth forest patch with interesting forest fire history near Muddus National Park. This state-owned forest is managed by forest company Sveaskog.
