Mattaureälven-Båldakatj, Arjeplog SFV

Swedish state (National property board / Statens fastighetsverk) was planning loggings in 2007 in this extremely high quality old-growth forest. They had already before that been exploiting some parts of this forest area prioritized for protection by the County Board authorities. Statens fastighetsverk is currently FSC-certified in Sweden. Now the area is likely to become protected within some years according to the decision by Swedish Government in 2009. All photos © Olli Manninen

This high-quality State owned old-growth forest area was officially prioritized for protection after the county board inventories in 2003-4. Forest company Sveaskog, who governs the area left however some parts of the area in forestry use in their own report in 2005. SSNC inventory group visited the area in 2007 documenting the biodiversity values.Despite the many very rare and highly red-listed species found some parts of the area are still left in forestry use by Sveaskog. No real protection plans have been made either in the temporarily set-aside parts. © Olli Manninen

A state-owned forest area prioritized for protection by the county board in 2004. Forest company Sveaskog that governs the area however declared parts of the area to be left in forestry use in 2005. SSNC inventory group visited the threatened parts in 2007 confirming the high protection values. Sveaskog has now in 2010 marked the unprotected parts as "restoration forests" which still allows also logging activities. SFV rejected the county board protection plans and declared parts of the area open for logging in 2006. SSNC activists visited the threatened parts in 2007 further documenting the remarkably high natural values and started campaigning for protection. Old-growth forest area owned by Jukkasjärvi forest commons in Kiruna next to Rautusakkara nature reserve. In 2007 there were 120 hectares of logging plans made to the area. SSNC inventory group documented very high biodiversity values at the site and SSNC Norrbotten made it public in a report. The logging started in 2007 but the forest company Sveskog that was buying the wood for energy use(!) backed after one third was been logged. Logging plans have now been withdrawn but no protection decisions have been so far made. Swedish government's recent decisions have cut finances for buying non state-owned forests for protection radically. This means that many forests even already planned to be protected must be dropped from the list and are very threatened to be exploited. Unprotected old-growth forest area in Kiruna owned by the Jukkasjärvi forest common. The finest parts of the forest were planned to be logged by the state-owned forest company Sveaskog in 2007. The plans are withdrawn for now but the destiny of the forest is still unclear. Swedish government's recent decisions have cut finances for buying non state-owned forests for protection radically. SCA-snitslingar i Norrsjö Strömsund

These beautiful forests by the lake near thee village Norsjön were also planned to be clearcut by SCA in 2007. Even the last tiny remnants of the old-growth forests right by the lake are to be exploited. Not only are these forests important for the local people they have high biodiversity values too. Norrsjöskogen Strömsund SCA

Threatened old-growth forests just next to village Norrsjön. This slope is a part of a large unprotected low-productive sub-montane forest area and it is very valuable both for ecological and social reasons. Forest company SCA is planning to clear-cut almost everything near Norrsjön that could be worth exploiting. Even knowing the natural and cultural values they refuse to even thinking of selling the forests for forest protection. SCA is currently FSC-certified in Sweden. All photos © Olli Manninen

A small submontane old-growth forest patch owned by Kiruna lutheran church situated next to Torneträsk-Soppero Nature Reserve. It is not acutely threatened for now and will maybe be protected some day if the owner has patience to wait for the decision. The parts of the area below submontane forest line are now mostly set aside by Sveaskog but on the tops and the slopes of the hill there are massive wind power plants built right now in 2010. Sveaskog is usually not logging old-growth forests above the submontane forest line but is very open to other forms of exploitation. Sveaskog is currently FSC-certified in Sweden. One possible threat to this kind of areas is wind power building. The forests by Harrurmyran presented in these photos are the most threatened at the moment as they lie below the submontane forest line and have no protection status at all. Rävaberget, Arvidsjaur

The 1500-hectare old-growth forest area at Rävaberget was prioritized for protection by the county board in 2004 after official inventories. Sveaskog, that governs this state-owned forest however decided not to agree with protection plans and left the area in its possession. Parts of the area are marked now as woodland key habitats, parts of it are left in commercial use and are highly threatened. Olli Manninen visited the most threatened parts in 2006 and confirmed very high natural values together with a long list of red-listed old-growth forest species. One more woodland key habitat has been registered after that but parts of the area are still threatened. Now the threat is actually even more acute since there are plans to establish wind power plants in the area too! This means there are plans to exploit also areas that were supposed to be protected by the woodland key habitat status. Sveaskog is currently FSC-certified in Sweden. Photos © Olli Manninen

A state-owned forest area prioritized for protection by the county board in 2004. Sveaskog that governs the area declared that the area will be included in a future "Ekopark" Rautiorova. As a part of the Ekopark scheme there were extensive plans for wind power exploitation in the area. After persistent resistance by the local people and SSNC Norrbotten the wind power plans have now been withdrawn. Kursuvaara, Övertorneå

This old-growth forest near the village Aapua was about to be clearcut in 2006 by the State-owned forest company Sveaskog. After persistent local resistance and very high natural values reported by voluntary SSNC activists visiting the area the remaining old forests at Kursuvaara are now a voluntary set aside areas. Härkmyran, Gällivare

An unprotected old-growth forest and mire ecosystem in Gällivare owned by the state and managed by forest company Sveaskog. This area was prioritized for protection by the County board in 2004. Sveaskog has ever since refused the protection planning and the area is still in 2010 threatened. There are only some small set-aside areas at Härkmyran, only covering less than 10% of the area.
