Kainji Dam Impoverishes communities in Nigeria
Society for Water and Public Health Protection (SWAPHEP) presents these photos to draw global attention to the deplorable conditions of a number of communities who gave their land and water to the construction of Kainji Dam over 40 years ago. Till date about 90% of the communities affected by the hydroelectricity dam do not have access to electricity being generated from their backyard. Poverty is very high and there is a general lack of access to safe drinking water, sanitation and healthcare facilities. Besides, the people face the risk of flood disasters annually. Join in efforts to ensure justice and fair share of the benefits from the dam.
