Madison Sports Car Club: Art Schmidt #81 VW (1982-84)
Art Schmidt racing at the Milwaukee Mile at Wisconsin State Fair Park and Black Hawk Farms Raceway in South Beloit, IL. - An avid racer and true gentleman of the sport. A mentor, as was Mr. Neese, when I was introduced to this sport. I work with him as a mechanic's assistant (and only crew member). Schmidt won in S2 (Sedan 2) class at the Milwaukee Mile at West Allis, WI. Afterward, he treated us all (including other friends) to a celebratory steak dinner at a favorite spot in the Milwaukee area. Drove in races as late as September 2001, at the age of 71, behind the wheel of a Sports Renault racer. The Madison Sports Car Club, a local MCSCC chapter, sponsored a memorial race in his name in June 2002 when he passed away in January 2002.
