Kili Day 5 - Summit Day
Summit day! We started climbing at 11:45 PM, hiking for 6-7 hours in the dark. The top of Kili is a huge crater, and we would reach the edge of the crater at Stella Point, just after sunrise. From there it would be a less-steep climb to the highest point, Uhuru peak. After reaching the summit, we descended back to our camp for a short break, then continued on down to around 12,000 feet. Returning to a lower altitude was cruicial to prevent altitude sickness, and allow us to recover from the difficult climb. However, it also meant knocking down 26 miles of hiking in one day.
