Filsham Reedbed
Sussex Wildlife Trust manage this reedbed on behalf of Hastings Borough Council.
These photos were taken on a walk was arranged by the Trust on 16 May 2009.
Our highly knowledgeable guide Alice identified the song of Cetti's, Reed, and Sedge warblers for us but these elusive birds kept out of sight hidden among the reeds.
We saw marsh frogs (and were surprised at the volume of their call!). Drinker moth caterpillars abounded on the board-walk
I revisited the reedbed on 2 June 2009 with a retired professional ornithologist who taught me to differentiate between the songs of these very similar birds, all of which were noisily present at the reedbed:
Reed warbler (burbling song)
Sedge warbler (burbling song with trill)
Cetti's warbler (short burst of noisy song as we walked past)
We also saw Reed Bunting, Lesser Whitethroat and Long Tailed Tits, and also Marsh frogs (very noisy!)
