Thursday 7th February 2008. Muizenberg, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa. THE YARROW FAMILY AND THEIR COB HOUSE IN MUIZENBERG CAPE TOWN! Carey Yarrow kneads clay on one of the walls upstairs. In the seaside town of Muizenberg near Cape Town, South Africa an exciting building project is underway. Meet the Yarrow family: Simric Yarrow, a 4th grade school teacher, his wife Carey and their two children, Kalila and Zoya (check spelling of names) are building something extraordinary and unique on their plot of land. Nowhere else in this area of the Cape is their anything quite like it. This is their new home currently under construction and nearing completion. What makes it so different is that this is a 'Cob House' built in an age old Devon English method mostly out of clay, straw and wood. The authentically designed home has been a labour of love for the Yarrow's and they are excitedly looking forward to the prospect of moving into their new abode. It's an amazingly functional house in all aspects, especially its heating and cooling abilities and it looks fantastic in an African way with its clay earthen walls, big windows and big shaped wooden beams and old tree trunks. Revolutionary in its appeal it certainly draws much attention. Not only does it look good and meet all the proper requirements and regulations but it's cheaper to build than the conventional South African home. The Yarrow's had a great idea and soon they'll reap the rewards of following through on their plans when they move happily into their cool Cob House!
