U.S.Naval Victories

Created in 1954, this 54 card set was one of Bowman Inc.'s last efforts. I have placed the cards in chronological sequence, rather than by card number and I have not expanded the size of the images, as I usually do.

As Davy Crockett was to the mid 1950's, Civil War News was to the early 1960's. The cards display more than pictures, because in tandem with the succinct titles, we finish with what would be better classifed as images. Much of the finished artwork was done by pulp legend Norm Saunders.

pulp art in WW2

Pulp art and pulp fiction were in their glory days as the world staggered into the Second World War. By 1938 'Horrors of War' let children share in the graphics of modern warfare and why not, they were not immune from the danger. I have not included any of that great set's images in this album, but perhaps I shall add some at a later moment.

A consistent theme throughout the pulp art era was the vulnerable young maiden, captued in a moment of utmost peril. This theme had rolled over from the earlier age of romance but could be traced back to the Greeks with their Andromeda, staked out for the monster and still placed out among the constellations.

Karen Morrow's espionage into these mysteries inadvertently split the cosmos into parallel halves in 1948. Now in 2008, in Universe 2, we inch towards our legacy.

the perils of Karen Morrow

Karen was born in 1919 and raised in Los Angeles. Her father was an eccentric millionaire, but Karen, like her younger sister Kathleen, charted her own course as a private detective in the seamy underside of L.A. In 1948, while working for Tom Dewey, she was accidentally transported to the year 2050 A.D. and experienced a 30 year hiatus. However, that part of her story I tell in another album. These are her early years...
