Rug Interrupted

My sister asked me if I might be interested in finishing a hooked rug for a friend. The friend's mother had started the rug years ago and never finished it. It was obvious a lot of work had gone into it and, now that the friend had acquired it, she had the idea of getting it finished and giving it back to her mom as a surprise. What a thoughtful daughter! My sister and I live far apart from each other, so she emailed me some photos and put me in touch with her friend. After we talked I thought I'd give it a try and her friend mailed me the rug.

Rug Hooking

I "rug hook" with old woolens and sewing scraps. After washing, the wool is cut or torn into strips and looped through a foundation fabric, using a tool that looks like a short crochet hook. What I do is known as wide-cut or primitive. I like to collect wool and use as is, so compositions are driven by and take advantage of the colors and textures in my collection. People often ask how long it takes - well it's a pretty long time! This is slow craft. When I know where I'm going with it I can average about a square foot a day, which isn't particularly fast, and I usually don't sustain that pace for long. This album represents some of my best pieces out of a sporadic 15 year work span. Thank you.

Fun Aprons! (click on cover photo to open)

This year decided to do something new, & am having fun making aprons out of old clothing, linens & what have you. The full aprons are from men's shirts. Others are from skirts, jeans, table runners, pillow cases, etc. I am using up scraps & odds & ends I have collected over the years, & love hunting for more apron-makings at thrift shops.

Paper Sculpture "Precious Pinatas" (click on cover photo to open)

"Precious Piñatas" are my whimsical papier-mache sculptures that begin like many a typical piñata - a balloon and paper cones, homemade flour paste, and newspaper. However, the only kind of candy they're meant for is eye candy! Each one requires at least 4-6 days to make from start to finish. All features/details are torn and cut paper and bits of this and that. I recycle a lot of stuff - cardboard, paper bags, egg shells, buttons, beads, jewelry and such. I also rug hook with old wool clothes and make aprons from old shirts and skirts - other albums in the working. Thank you.
