Prince has just handed off to Derrick Coleman (to the right of the outstretched arm). On this play, Brian Price (Arm outstretched in blue jersey) BLEW by Jeff Baca who recovered JUST quick enough to barely push him out of a tackle-for-loss.
This play saw Darrick Coleman (arms wrapped around ball in center of photo) get a nice block by Eddie Williams (#62, behind Coleman) on a hard-charging Reggie Carter. On the right is Austin with a fistful of Tony Dye jersey.
This is the end of the run in the previous photo. Terrence Austin (white jersey to left of #82) didn't take kindly to Tony Dye's (Object of Terrence's helmet slap) somewhat late shove. Terrence isn't big, but he's feisty....
OK. So in this picture, two things: (i) notice the absence of our left tackle; Xavier Su'a-Filo.....last seen blocking Korey Bosworth out of the video frame; (ii) Christian Ramirez (#24) showing why the coaches reportedly like him. Ramirez takes the fake handoff, then proceeds to knock Datone Jones (Blue jersey #56; being blocked) out of the pocket which allowed Prince to complete the pass to Chane Moline. Oh, and Justin Mann (I think)....good luck against the Hasiak (#74) and Maiava (#51) double team.
Kevin Prince handoff to Christian Ramirez (24) with Trevor 'Moose' Theriot (31) lead blocking. Theriot put a good smack on Kyle Bosworth (to #74's immediate left) and sealed him to the inside, but Aaron Ware (just visible above left of #74) filled the gap for a stop of 1-2 yards. Su'a-Filo (56) did an admirable job against Damien Holmes and opened up a nice hole though.
Nice Hole for Jonathan Franklin (23), huh? Not really. Damien Holmes (blue jersey to Franklin's left) closed that gap real quick and Franklin literally squirted through for about 2-3 yards. These were the second team squads. Nick Ekbatani went down on this play holding his knee. Don't know his status.
Doesn't look like a big hole for Milton Knox (2), but it was big enough for a 6-7 yard gain if you assume Stan Mckay takes him down (can't see him, but he comes from the left side). 15-20 if he slips through Mckay's hands and gets taken down by Viney (out of frame to the right).....
Brehaut roll out right, finds Corey Harkey (87; arms outstretched with the ball) for a 15 yard gain. Would've been nice, but likely a sack earlier as Sean Westgate (behind bald guy) went seemingly unblocked by the second team O. Great effort by Harkey though....
Not sure what you call on this. Offensive facemask on Su'a-Filo (engaged with Datone Jones 56 blue jersey)? Holding?
It's been awhile, but from what I remember, this is exactly how you're supposed to make a catch. Embree (82), of course, catches this for about a 5-yard gain, but hit immediately. This is probably why he doesn't drop anything; great technique. And he also provided Prince a great outlet as Jerzy was charging hard...
(i) Su'a-Filo (56) at left tackle taking care of business against Korey Bosworth. (ii) Kai Maiva (arm hooked around blue jersey 90) probably gets this called back. (iii) Eddie Williams kept Price away from Ramirez (24). End result? No gain. Ramirez runs into the mass of humanity on the right.
The reason I posted this picture is for the two guys on the far left. In the blue jersey (10), we have one Mr. Akeem Ayers. In a horizontal throw position we have one Mr. Eddie Williams (62). Just prior to this frame, Eddie Williams comes from the right to block Ayers. Akeem sheds the block by throwing him to the side. Eddie holds onto Akeem and gets airborne horizontally before crashing to the ground. Yes, Akeem appears to be rather strong. Take a look at other photos of Eddie Williams. You'll understand.
Example of Chow's penchant for TB dump off passes. I will say that Ramirez (24) appears to have soft hands and catches most of what is thrown his way. In this play, Ramirez put a hit on Damien Holmes (97) before releasing to catch this pass....only to be wrapped up at the LOS by Akeem Ayers (10) & David Carter (engaged with Eddie WIlliams 62).
Sweet Jesus...look at this 'hole'...er, I mean, the entire right side of the line looks like a Mt. St. Helens 'after' picture.... Franklin (23) hit this for about a 5-yard gain before Jeff Dickman (out of frame) comes blasting in from the left. Brandon Bennet (engaged with Patrick Larimore blue 42) took Larimore completely out of this play. David Carter (85) in pursuit.
Damien Thigpen (25, almost looks like 35 in the middle) shooting through a narrow hole up the gut. Hit this for about 5 yards with the three's. Interesting to see Jake Dean (57) with the threes. If I remember correctly, Ekbatani was originally running with the second team at Center before going out holding his knee. Ryan Taylor filled his role, as best I can tell.
Remember the earlier photo of Eddie Williams (62) in a horizontal throw position? Well, notice the average-sized people to his right.
Demetrius Papadakis (30) getting a hand off....not quite the load his cousin(?) was.....Good to see Sean Sheller (72) in the mix....
This is TE Andrew Yelich (99) catching a pass in the flat with Alex Mascarenas zeroing in from the right....
Coverage Sack by with Justin Mann about to drop the hammer. Antwon Moutra (6) and Jerry Johnson (white 85 in background).
One of the few fumbles on the day. Craig Sheppard (on knees looking like he's kissing the ground) fumbles the handoff. you can just see the point of the football between his knees.....
Christian Ramirez (arms wrapping the ball) bursting through (praise be) a hole in the line. 'Only' about a 5-yard gain, but I like the Maiava (51) sealing off of Kyle Bosworth (behind him). Jerzy makes the tackle. He's a pretty solid opposite DT. I'll tell you what though, if this play runs right instead of up the gut, Brian Price was about 5-yards behind the LOS...not sure if Eddie Williams let him go that deep b/c it was away from the play, or if he got beat....but Price is fast for a big dude.
The setup: Darrick Coleman (33) out of the backfield catches the pass, turns around and gets stood up. In comes Akeem Ayers (10 in blue just to the left of Gavin Ketchum who is number 10 in white). Ayers laid a smack on the 'not-so-small' Coleman that sent him flying about 5 yards to the right. This picture is the tail end of that interaction with the formerly upright Coleman.
This is Akeem Ayers (10) in action again tackling Christian Ramirez (holding the rock). Don't take his position as an indication he got run over. He originally came in from the right, planted underneath Hasiak (74 falling to the left), then managed to grab and hang on as Ramirez ran full bore to the right again. Ramirez likely would've ripped out of most defenders' grasps. Not sure if Rick is concerned or excited in the background...
Again, just a pleasant view. A QB with time to pass and no one in his face. Brehaut completes this for a nice little 5-yard gain to TE Cory Harkey (out of frame to the right). Notice Johnathan Franklin (underneath blue 97) picking up the defensive end rush by Damien Holmes. This was a battle of the second teams....
Couple things here. Hard to see but the guy in the white jersey to the top right of Sean Westgate (blue 11) is Darius Savage. He threw a block that covered both Damien Holmes AND David Carter (both engaged. The other thing is Ricky Marvray in the very right with his helmet popping off, throwing a block on Stan Mckay (blue 4, very far right of photo). This kid has a motor. He's all over the place. Good hands. Johnathan Franklin (wrapped up) would've gotten more yards but Logan Paulsen blocked Patrick Larimore right into him.
Here's the exciting thing about this pic. Notice Milton Knox with the ball. About to make the tackle in the backfield? Keenan Graham (59)...Freshman out of Las Vegas. The video shows Keenan lined up at DE on the right. He takes a step forward to the outside of the TE like a normal rush, but then VERY quickly stunts back around the DT and blows by Micah Kia (73) who, in all honesty, didn't even see him as Kia was focused on the DT. Keenan's move was almost like a breakdancer it was so smooth and fluid. It's almost as if he bounced back around.....
Just another pic of the O-line doing their job. Look at the size of that pocket. Jeff Baca gets credit for this one. Brian Price (92 blue in left of photo) bull rushed him and he stood his ground, which clogged up the area for Jerzy (90) who was trying to stunt around. Unfortunately, coverage sack as Aaron Hester (off frame to the right) was in perfect position to pick off a pass to Nate Chandler. BUT, Prince tucked the ball and DIDN'T throw the INT. It's the little things.....
Not sure whose fault this sack is...Kevin Prince rolling out with Korey Bosworth in hot pursuit 'tomahawking' him. Notice Darrick Coleman (33) chasing Bosworth. It would appear Coleman didn't pick up his assignment on Bosworth after the fake handoff, but it could also be argued that Prince turned and ran too soon not allowing Coleman to block Bosworth before Bosworth recognized the play. I think it was the latter. Pass completed, but realistically a sack about 5 yards deep.
I agree with Alterraun (1). Better to let Akeem Ayers deal with Logan Paulsen (86).......
#17 wasn't listed on the roster, but I think it's Ted Landers. Anyhow, from what little I saw, not a bad passer. Between Brehaut (12), Craft (3) and Landers (17?), this was the prettiest of 5 throws for this drill....
Christian Ramirez (with the rock) putting a nice hit on Aaron Hester....who was in perfect position for the tackle, but still got driven back by Ramirez. Ramirez probably would've fallen forward for an addition 3-4 yards...
Young or not, Stan Hasiak (74) is still a big man. This is him putting a block on Reggie Carter (yes, he's there). Christian Ramirez (24) gets hit for a small gain by Akeem Ayers (10). And, you gotta love Brian Price. He's in the blue jersey to Hasiak's left jumping over Jeff Baca to come assist on the tackle. Wouldn't have been credited, but would defintely have removed all doubts of breaking the tackle.
This was one of the more impressive examples of blocking on the day. You see where Derrick Coleman (33) is? That's where Jerzy (tattooed arm in blue jersey to the right of Prince) USED to be....that is until Maiava drove, and I mean, DROVE him out of the play. Jeff Baca (62) just manhandled Kyle Bosworth on this play. This was good for about 10+ yards.
I'm really surpised Milton Knox isn't higher up the depth chart. Every time I see him, he's doing something right. This is him putting a block on Damien Holmes (97). Low center of gravity helps when you need to lift 250+ lbs off the ground....Maybe the coaches were displeased that he lifted Holmes TOO high off the ground so that Holmes may have had a chance to bat the pass down? This was a completion for 8 yards to Gavin Ketchum....
Not a great shot, but look where Brian Price (92) is.....Not sure if he makes the tackle on Ramirez (just underneath Baca's outstretched arms), but Baca was caught anticipating Brian rushing to the inside. Brian rushed to the outside and if he doesn't make the stop, he sure comes close....
OK, so we know about Ayers' strength. Here's an example of his pass coverage. That's him batting the ball down against our own Logan Paulsen (86)......
This was definitely the hit of the day judging by the crowd's reaction. Look just above #76. What you see is Johnathan Franklin (23) getting hit by Freshman Stan Mckay......You'll notice Stan is horizontal and Johnathan Franklin's feet are still attached to the turf. It almost looks like Stan's whispering sweet nothings in Johnathan's earhole.
This is a continuation of the previous photo. Lower right corner. Johnathan on the bottom; Stan continuing his rightward trajectory....sorry for the blurry, I whipped the camera to catch this when I heard it.....
I posted this one for a shot of Joseph Fauria (94). Tall and lanky like Presley, but strikes me as about 10 lbs. lighter than Presley. He needs to bulk up to become a true tight end methinks...
What do you get when you muff a punt return? 50 push ups...Mr. Terrence Austin....
Akeem Ayers (10 blue) welcoming Jayson Allmond (staring at Ayers' hamstring). Allmond at fullback went to put a block on Ayers away from the action. Much as with Eddie Williams, Allmond ends up on the losing end of the exchange.
