At the bottom of the Mediterranean's second largest island, Cagliari's seven hills hold dear its Punic, Carthaginian, and Roman remains -- but makes daily use of its Piedmont-Baroque buildings. Closer to Africa than to the Italian mainland, it's been Sardinia's capital in a number of reincarnations including under the Romans, Pisans, and the Spanish crown.
