Cabela's

At the invitation of the Cabela's in Boise, members of Squaw Butte manned an information booth about BCHI in the store and performed packing demonistrations for shopers and store staff.

Tri-Pod Lookout

Tri-Pod Lookout on West Mountain has one of the best views in south western Idaho. From this no longer used fire lookout on a clear day riders can see from the Eagle Cap Mountains to the west, to the Saw Tooth Mountains to the east and all the valleys and peaks between. An excellent view of Squaw Butte, Long and High Valley's help give riders insite into this rugged country. There are a number of trails to Tri-pod lookout. We used West Mountain South TR-131 starting at Sage Hen Meadows. Riders can also use Joe's trail or a number of others out of the Sage Hen area. Pictures by Linda Hays

Packers Play Day III

45 Horses and over 80 people gathered at the Circle G River Ranch on a perfect fall day to have fun. And fun is what that had. A number of events and games were played on horseback, many of which were new to both the horse and riders. Highlights were the tire drag, 4 leaf clover, barrals and balls, and polebending while trying to gather 3 inch rings with an 18 inch pole. Until you tried it, you have know idea how hard that can be! Musical chairs was again a big hit, as was the lunch hosted by the 4H. Thanks again to the Circle G River Ranch for hosting this event and to all Squaw Butte members who worked so hard to put in on.

Diamond Basin

On a perfect fall day, six members of Squaw Butte Backcountry horsemen took a ride back into history. The Diamond basin area in the owhee's has vivid history of ranching and mining. Riding through this area you will pass old mines, cabins and other artifacts of that period of Idaho history. Pictures provided by Linda Hays.

Wilson Corral & Gabe's Peak

Another perfect weekend in the mountains. Eight members of Squaw Butte, performed trail maintenance on the Wilson Corral and Gabe's Peak trails, while having a great time and some of the best views in Idaho. This ride as also special as seven of the riders were exploring this country for the first time and around every corner was something new to see. Hitt Mountain Trails

We had a great turn out for the Hitt Mountain Tool Cache project. Ten members and one guest worked on two trails. Eleven head of riding stock and eight head of pack stock were brought to support the project. The riders on the 268 trail reported it was an enjoyable ride, with great views, ending close to the Sturgill Peak Lookout. The 270 trail was difficult at first to find due to numerous cow paths and healed over tree blazes, but was successfully found after some scouting around. There were quite a few down trees, and a lot of brushing done. Approximately 2.5 miles of the trail was cleaned. As usual, we had delicious group meals and lots of good conversation. West Mountain Trails - North

A very ambitious project was undertaken on the Weekend of August 2nd and 3rd. Squaw Butte members hoped to ride four of the mountains most scenic trails while performing necessary trail maintenance. The trails included Poison, West Mountain North, Wilson Corral and Gabe’s Peak. Time and extensive down fall on the trails prevented us from doing the Wilson Corral Gabe’s Peak loop, but we did ride three of the four and removed a lot of trail obstructions while having a great time and traveling through some amazing country. Robbin and Toby joined us for dinner on Saturday providing a Dutch oven pot roast which was enjoyed by all. Ellen and Lou Ann provide these great pictures of our weekend.

Lightning Ridge

This 13.5 miles trail runs from the south end of Deadwood Reservoir to forest road 611 near Crouch. As the trail ascends it provides views of Scott Mountain, Onion Valley and the surrounding mountains and valleys. Sections of the trail are steep and rocky. The trail passes granite rock outcroppings, lodge pole pine, douglas fir as it snakes alone the ridge top. The trail passes through part of the 18,550 acre Anderson creek fire. The trail head parking at the NF-611 is very limited, not more then a few very well parked trailers.

Elk Meadows - Frank Church Wilderness

Elk & Corduroy Meadows on the south western edge of the Frank Church Wilderness is the perfect place for a three day pack trip. The trail head is almost perfect for horse trailers, the road in is easy to drive and the area is a series of lush green meadows framed by rocky peaks and mountain lakes and streams. The camp site we use is about a 90 minute ride from the trail head, with excellent water, shade and a great place for the stock. Rich grasses were popular with the stock that got to graze in rotations. The ride to Bernard Lake crosses marshy meadows, timbered and burned areas and ends in a steep climb up to the lake below granite cliff. Those willing to pack some fishing gear may hook into a nice rainbow trout. Other trails allow you to explore this area, but remember to bring a good saddle saw, as downfall maybe encountered. Wapiti Meadows

Surrounded by National Forest land, this resort has provided their guests with first class hunting, fishing and riding adventures for many years. Twenty three Squaw Butte members were privileged to be invited for a weekend on the ranch and to aid in getting the local riding trails ready for the 2008 season. We were treated like family and ate like kings. Four work parties each rode in a different compass direction clearing trails and enjoying the scenic areas the trails passed through. We are all hoping that we are invited again in the future for another Wapiti Meadows weekend.

NTD - Peace Creek

June 6 & 7, 2008. “Nation Trails Day” this year was a two day project on the Peace Creek trail north of Garden Valley. This heavily used trail had five rock out cropping the trail crossed that made sections of the trail dangerous. Over the years a number of users have been hurt crossing these areas. A multi departmental project between the State & the Forest Service was started to break up these rocky areas with explosives and rebuild a safer trail bed. Last fall and this spring Emmett Rangers have drilled a number of holes in the rock, and on Friday June 6, 2008 those holes were filled with explosives that were packed in by members of the Squaw Butte Chapter. Phil Ryan and Terry McDonald spent the whole day safely transporting the charges and detonators to each location, where the charges were placed. They then retreated a safe distance, after which the charges were set off by the FS explosives team. On Saturday members of Squaw Butte returned to each site, moved the broken

Willow Creek Wild Horse Area

Willow Creek north of Emmett, is a perfect spring ride. The grass is deep and oh so green, the wild flowers are blooming and the breezes cool. Saturday, May 25th was just such a day. Five members of Squaw Butte joined for a day ride to refresh our minds and spirits after a long sad week, while hoping to get a band count of the wild horse herd that lives here. The refreshing of spirit was a success, the band count not so much. Cattle grasing in the lower slopes had pushed the horses to ridges farther then we were willing to ride. We did see a band but only on a distant ridge.

Dr. Sally Schindele 1949-2008

Dr. Sally whose infectious smile and enthusiasm brightened every event she attended left us suddenly on May 19, 2008. Sally will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to know her.

Weiser River Trail

On a cool but sunny Saturday, 16 Squaw Butte members and guest rode a section of the Weiser River Trail. This is a rails to trails project and is an excellent ride for beginning trail riders, or spring & fall rides. The trail is in excellent condition the the views along the river are great. If you have not ridden at least on second of this trail it should be on your to do list. One of the highlights was riding through a herd of a couple hundred goats and their kids.

Wilson Creek Canyon

On a perfect spring riding day, 12 members and guests left the Wilson Creek Parking area and headed south up trail W100 into the Wilson Creek canyon for one of the best rides in the area. This ride has it all. An interesting trail with 12 stream crossings of all sorts of different types to challenge / train your trail horse, cliffs with colorful rock formations, the possibility of seeing a lot of different types of wild life and of course the scenic views of the Snake river from the high places. A two canyon ride is possible including both Wilson and Hard trigger canyons by doing a loop ride.

Backcountry Skills Clinic

85 adults and a number of Kids spent the day at the Circle G River Ranch at the 6th annual skills clinic presented by Squaw Butte. While the day was cool, low 40's it was sunny and the presentations keep everyone in there seats with short trips into the sun to warm up from time to time. The attendies injoyed a varity of presentations and a great lunch.

Little Butte Ride & BBQ

Our first March event, a ride and BBQ at Ellen's & Charles was a great success. We had 18 riders, and a total of 25 enjoying the food after. The ride was interesting due to a wide variety of weather conditions. During the ride we experienced dense fog and sunny blue skies. The riders broke up into three groups, but pictures were received for posting from only one group, so not all riders are pictured. During the ride a number of deer herds were seen. Herd sizes varied between 5 and 30 animals. As it was a cool spring day the stock were full on energy and with the varable conditions, it made for some very interesting and enjoyable time in the saddle. The food was excellent everyone left well feed and in good spirits.

Birds of Prey - February

10 members of Squaw Butte BCHI braved a gray, foggy day to ride the trails between the rocks under the cliff of the Birds of Prey area of the Snake River Canyon. The horses, and riders were all happy to be on the trail again, the weather improved, and the sun came out to end the day under blue skys. All who attended, were happy that they choose to load their trailer, and not get that extra 30 minutes of sleep.
