Elk Meadows - Frank Church Wilderness
Elk & Corduroy Meadows on the south western edge of the Frank Church Wilderness is the perfect place for a three day pack trip. The trail head is almost perfect for horse trailers, the road in is easy to drive and the area is a series of lush green meadows framed by rocky peaks and mountain lakes and streams. The camp site we use is about a 90 minute ride from the trail head, with excellent water, shade and a great place for the stock. Rich grasses were popular with the stock that got to graze in rotations. The ride to Bernard Lake crosses marshy meadows, timbered and burned areas and ends in a steep climb up to the lake below granite cliff. Those willing to pack some fishing gear may hook into a nice rainbow trout. Other trails allow you to explore this area, but remember to bring a good saddle saw, as downfall maybe encountered. Ten members of Squaw Butte, spend the 4th of July holiday and all enjoyed themselves completely. Picture provided by Linda, Rob & Robbin.
