Packers Playday IV

Our forth Play Day co-hosted with the Circle G River Ranch was a great success. You can tell that by all the smiles and sweaty saddle blankets produced. Events held included, traditional and team pole bending, jousting, musical chairs and baloon relay race to finish the day. Partisipants ranged from the very young to the young at heart. The 4H did a great job of catering lunch and made a bit of money to boot as it was a fund raiser. The weather was perfect the events fun and the compitation was friendly. If you missed this year, put it on your calendar for next year.

Grandjean - Sawtooth Wilderness

Grandjean Trail head and campground is the north western gateway to the Sawtooth wilderness. This facility is popular with horseman, hunters and back packers. A number of trails are accessable from this location, excellent horse camping facilities and of course the majestic mountain canyons and lakes. Twenty members of Squaw Butte spend a perfect indian summer weekend, exploring some of the trails, while enjoying the sound of the south fork of the Payette river flowing through our camping area.

Boiling Springs

Boiling Springs on the Middle Fork of the Payette river is a perfect late summer or fall destination. There is an excellent horse camping area over the bridge from the main paid camp with good parking and access to water. The area has two interesting trails, Wetfoot climbs the ridge to the west and if ridden to the top, has a view of Long Valley and West Mountain, the River trail, heads up a meadow and follows the river canyon meeting up with the Bull Creek trail. The river trail crosses the Payette a number of time so should only be ridden durning low water periods. A number of nice hot springs are found long this trail also, making it popular with hikers and back packers.

Yellow Jacket

This was a project with the Cascade Ranger District, that included trail work and building a new bridge to replace one that had burned in the fire of 2007. Much of this area is close due to salvage logging and restoration so camping is limited, but we found a good spot near the Yellow Jacket trail head. On Saturday two teams were formed, the guys worked with the rangers building a new bridge and the girls cleaned 16 miles of trail. On Sunday the whole group did a ride up telephone ridge. Weather play a role in this project with a major lighting storm coming through Saturday night, and a second one coming through Sunday afternoon.

Squaw & Poison Creek

The Squaw and Poison creek trail head on West Mountain provides riders and horses with two very different riding experiences. Poison Creek is a ridge trail that climbs quickly with great views while riding through the timber. The highlight of this trail is when you top out and can look down on Cascade lake. Squaw Creek trail stays in a canyon following the creek up to Wilson meadow. This trail is mostly in dense old growth timber and crosses a number of cliff bands. On a hot day the trail is mostly in the shade with lots of water access for your stock. Horse camping for these trails is excellent with good parking, a shaded area for your kitchen and good access to water.

Wilson Corral

Wilson Corral trail head is one of Squaw Butte's favorite camping areas on West Mountain, but this year We could not camp there due to a very large rock blocking the access road. We camped at Rammage Meadows and rode into the trail head, adding an extra 4 miles to the ride. We had perfect weather, a good turnout, and way to much food. Linda Hays build a trail safety sign that was placed at a location that had caused more than one wreck and a lot of down timber and brush was removed.

Peace Creek

Over the last few years this area has burned twice. These fires removed all the under growth in large areas the trail passes through. Two years ago, on national trail day, these burned areas were full of morals, this summer it is wild flowers. Riding on this day was akin to riding through a jungle of color. The forest service project was to pack in some metal edges for some new bridges and pack out some unused material. A new section of trail between the peace creek and devil's slide trail also needed some down fall removed. We broke up into two groups, Linda and Rob taking a side trip to work the new trail while Phil and the rest of the team did the packing in and out. Linda took the pictures which is why there are not more of the other riders.

Bull Trout Lake

Bull Trout Lake is an almost perfect horse camping location. Good roads, a very nice place to camp, multiple trails to ride and of course the vista's. Members of Squaw Butte and Twin Falls chapters spend three days over the 4th of July holiday, riding and working on the trails. When not in the saddle, great food and conversations were shared around the camp fire, and on the last night a sing-a-long was held. This was a first for Squaw Butte.

4 Mile Creek Wild Horse Management Area

14 Members of Squaw spent this national holiday riding the rugged trails of the BLM wild horse management area north of Emmett. The goal was to have a great ride, and with luck spot and count bands of wild horses. We were lucky in that we spotted two bands and that information as pass to the BLM Wild horses manager.

Sawyer Training

Members of Emmett & Twin Falls BCHI chapter met at the Emmett Ranger Office joined by five Emmett Rangers for a full day of sawyer training. The day started with a class room presentation that included the official FS course material used to train all their sawyers with a heavy dose of in the woods stories to bring the material to life. The afternoon was spent in the Three forks area of Squaw Creek working with our FS mentors on bucking and falling skills.

Two Canyon Ride

14 members took advantage of a perfect spring day to do a big loop ride that traversted both the Wilson Creek and Hard Trigger canyons. We have taken rides to one or the other, but had never combined the two. While it is a bit longer then our standard fun ride, witht he great weather and fresh horses, it was a great day.

Brand Inspection Ride

This event was an opportunity for members to get Permanent Brand Inspection performed on their horses and mules without having to make separate arrangements with the Idaho Brand Inspectors office. Joel Miesbach and his wife met the chapter east of the cycle park in Emmett, and any member who was interested could get their stock inspected. Between 09:15 and 12:30 eleven horses and mules got their "Passports". The process went very smoothly and I want to thank all who participated. After then inspections were done groups formed for a nice day ride. The day was marred when one member’s saddle slipped causing a spring ride wreck. A quick trip to the emergency room confirmed bruises and very sore muscles.

Little Butte BBQ & Ride

On a partly cloudy Saturday morning 12 riders spend a few hours exploring on of the gem's of Gem county, the Little Butte BLM area. Squaw Butte is fortunate to have a member who's fence borders this little used area allowing access to the trails and wild life. Little Butte is a perfect spring ride, to get the kinks out of both our stock and our selves. After the ride, the group was joined by four more members for a tasty late lunch.

2009 Outdoor Show & BCHI Board Meeting

6 members of Squaw Butte attended the State Board meeting and Outdoor show. Phil Ryan was elected State Chairman and Bill and Marybeth did a presentation. Marybeth and Kay did very well in the dutch oven cookoff and I am sure we will get to try their dish at on of our events.

Cabella's

Squaw Butte was invited to do packing demostrations at the Boise Cabella's Spring Adventures days. Members with Woody the Mule, showed a number of packing techniques and answered a lot of questions. Maybe a future member of BCHI visited with the team.

Backcountry Skill Clinic

On a cool and clear Saturday, sixty members and guest came together at the Circle G River Ranch to exchange information and learn new skills. This was the 7th clinic that Squaw Butte has hosted, and each year we try to introduce new thing while improving on the core skills and information a backcountry rider need to know for a fun and safe experience.

CPR & Wilderness First Aid Training

The Emmett Rangers district provided a full day of training at their facility for members of Backcountry Horsemen and their own employees. The training was based on "Wilderness Emergency Care", by Steve Donelan copyright 2008. This was a full and fun day and is highly recommend to all our members in the future.

Celebration Park

Nine members of Squaw Butte ventured down to this great ride between the cliffs and the Snake River. We trailer in three groups and all arrived about the same time at the park. But, parking in different areas we never ran into each other, so all groups though that they were the only ones riding on this cool but sunny day. With the large number of trail variations and the rock formations and boulders, it is easy to hide a number of horses and riders.
