It was a fun game that we played pretty much every day!
Beijing was a fascinating mix of old and new (and smog....).
We spent our first morning at the Ghost (aka Dirt) Market.
We were there by 5:30, so watched them set up their booths.
It's a large open-air market with rows of jade, pottery, antiques (fake and otherwise), calligraphy scrolls, fans, & Mao memorabilia.
No Spitting!
This is going to be the new CCTV office building
We think all of the pictures we've seen of it in the US have been doctored to show blue skies.

We took a tour of the hutongs (the back alleys) of Beijing.
This is inside the courtyard of a courtyard home in the hutongs. The hutongs (alleys) are formed by the alleyways created by the courtyard houses.
The north building, which is the most important one in the household and where we were invited.

The drummers were mostly drum-synching to backing tracks..but they wore pleather.
These performers are deaf and perform with the aid of two conductors on the side.
Hooray, Olympics!
The main Olympic store was across from our hotel.
The Forbidden City (I am wondering if they see the irony in keeping Mao's picture in front, seeing as he tried to destroy it, but ran out of funding).

The lion with the cub under its claw is the female and the one with the orb under its paw is the male.
It's hard to describe how immense the Forbidden City is. It covers 180 acres of land!
Construction was started in 1406 and completed around 1420.
They were in the middle of massive renovations in preparation for the games.

Farmland on the way to the Great Wall
We did a 10K hike from one part of the Great Wall to another.
It was pretty ambitious, as the Wall is not restored in this part.
Some sections were VERY steep!
Our guide, Paul
Did we mention that this section had not been restored?
So many stairs!
We randomly ran into Charlene Lee--a nurse at Paul's residency
Almost there!
