Fort Columbia State Park, WA, Sept. 2009

Fort Columbia State Park is a 593-acre day-use historical park with 6,400 feet of freshwater shoreline on the Columbia River. The park celebrates a military site that constituted the harbor defense of the Columbia River from 1896 to 1947. The fort was fully manned and operational through three wars. The area was also home for the Chinook Indians and their famed Chief Comcomly.

Bunea Vista, CO Circle Route

This 160 mile route to Buena Vista, CO. took us over Monarch Pass 11,312 ft high and on the way back to Gunnison, Cottonwood Pass,12,126 ft. We were in search of seeing some snow on the several 14,000 plus feet mountians near Buena Vista. NO SNOW!!!

Royal Gorge Bridge and Park

The Royal Gorge bridge was built in 1929. It is the world's hightest suspension bridge. 1,053 above the Arkansas river. The Incline Railway was built in 1931. It is the world's steepest incline. 1550 feet at an 45-degree angle. The Arial Tram is the world's longest single span. 2,200 feet.

This is a gravel road that follows the route of the old narrow gauge, Florence and Cripple Creek Railroad. The 34 mile road starts at an elevation of 5330' and at Cripple Creek, CO the elevation is 9,395'.

Tall Grass Pairie National Preserve, Kansas

Tallgrass prairie once covered 170 million acres of North America. Less than 4 % remains, mostly in the Flint Hills of Kansas. The grasses grow 3 to 6 ft. Depending on soil and water. The preserve is situated in northern Chase County, Kansas.
