The town center is a square presided over by a giant stature of Mao. The statue is fronted by thousands of potted plants, the stunning reds, pinks and gold colors of which set off the stark white Mao, right arm raised. And everybody and anybody can take a break there, sitting on the steps: Tibetan monks, construction workers, sweethearts, families, toddlers, farmers. Sichuan food is famous for its firery flare. Hot peppers and Sichuan numbing spice create an explotion of flavor and hellish heat. For this meal we later found out we were eating snail and frog, so maybe the addition of a few extra spices wasn't so bad.
