Rufous Red-tailed Hawk w/ white patches 022510
This RTHA was striking with its white patches on throat, nape, and leg. I could not identify its prey item other than it had feathers. The hawk was distant and the digiscoped images are poor--for the birders, not the photographers! As I watched this bird its reaction alerted me to the Harlan's Hawk flying overhead.

Long-eared Owl Grasslands Park
This owl was found Jan 16 by Zach Smith at Grasslands Park, Yolo Co. (near Davis), CA. We have very few of these in Yolo Co. and this one was well-hidden in a eucalyptus. The day was foggy/overcast and the images here are noisy, but a great bird!

Bird first reported by Brian Sullivan on Jan. 2. I shot these on Jan 4 about 3/4 mi west of the intersection of Rd 94 and Rd 29 in Yolo Co (about 6 mi west of Davis, CA).

This Red-tailed Hawk is judged to be a juvenile dark morph Harlan's. It was first found in the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area near Davis, California, on February 21, 2009. These images were taken on February 24, 2009.

Pelagic Birding Southern California June 2008
This was a pelagic birding trip intended to search deep water for rarities and mega-rarities off of southern California. The weather did not cooperate and we had 30 knot winds and 8-12 foot swells for three days. Conditions improved the last day, but we had no luck for rarities. Nonetheless, a good time was had.
