Finally made it to Nairobi to view the Filter Factory
Sifter used to refine the clay before molding it
The filters actually look like ceramic flower pots. Here they are placed on racks to dry after being molded
The varying colors of the pots reflect how far along they are in the drying process
This mixer preps the clay while mixing in sawdust. It looks like a very large scale pastry mixer
Hmm, this could make alot of cookie dough!
These silver containers are the actual molds
This is a finished filter sitting on top of a blue water bucket. We purchased 10 of these sets for rural clinics
The company that makes these particular ones is called 'Chujio'. The process was actually developed by Potters for Peace and is now managed by Thirst Aid
Filters are very fragile and must be removed with the lid, to give it some added stability.
We bid farewell to the filter factory folks and prepare to hit the road home to Kisumu
We stop on the way home to buy some produce. The locally grown carrots are huge, and such a bright orange!
The country side on the way back to Kisumu is beautiful
