Wayne encountered several live Humboldt Squid, washed ashore near Thornton Creek (head of Ucluelet Harbour).
This is a great shot of something one is likely to see in the fall on the West Coast of Vancouver Island - a black bear eating a salmon.
This is unlikely - a black bear taking a Humboldt squid. In fact this may be the very first documented case of these two species interacting.
According to Wayne, the squid was still alive as the bear took it. Squid are not toxic, so the bear likely enjoyed his raw calamari meal.
