The team at 4AM in the parking lot getting ready to fly out!
Sarah and her sweet shades
The World Hope Haiti offices
Gates are up everywhere in P-au-P so a lot of places (like the WH offices) have courtyards inside off the street
Shots of P-au-P when Thony took us around to see what the city is like...
...lots of little shops on the main street level...
...people selling things on the street...
...and lots of concrete...
this lady is selling bags of water - like bottled water, but its just in plastic bags instead
a really nice area of the city with a HUGE park
Apparently no one knows exactly what this is but the president has been building it. Any guesses? I have no idea...
The sprawling and pristine presidential palace, hmmmm...
lots of people in the park - Thony said the formal employment rate here tends to be around 4-6%, so there are always a lot of people spending thier days outside going round and about
shaved ice cart
lots of bouganvilla (the flowers) all over the place
more shots of P-auP while driving out of town to Jacmel
the street with houses behind on the hill
a closer shot of housing - all concrete, no windows, lots of stacking one on top of another
housing...
paintings being sold streetside
Wyclef!
a tap tap - the Haitian form of public transportation
on the way out of town
a community courtyard
driving across a river, always fun
getting into the countryside...
an old mine...
cock fighting arena
getting to Petitie Goave...
Our awkward room in PG. Yes, strange enough that it deserved a picture.
Calabas tree. They're huge, wait and see..
and really heavy
don't want one of those to fall on you!
the sea at PG
the reef by us...
with some strange critters
goats - all over
pigs - all over
and cows too
a hand-carved canoe
rock on Kate, rock on
the little gangtsa kid - he's so cool
braiding hair
the ladies who helped out with the flag day celebration
Kristopher
leaving (or trying to leave!) the nieghborhood after day 1 in PG
waiting for a mango
Alan - he and Thony helped us out a lot that week
hand games
Sarah and her little buddies
soap bubbles were a hit. You could spend all day with some of these kids letting them make bubbles
and bring out a camera and everyone wants thier picture!
hopefully a lot of these kids will be able to be in one of our classes when we go back
we were here during school hours, so the kids in these pictures - not in school
lots of dancing
They thought Pete was a jungle gym
she didn't realize that this was her when she saw the picture because she thought she had been smiling
so she wanted to try again
Yol - In the back doing her hair - she's helped a lot with teaching me Creole. And Naomi, who's also such a cool kid and was really helpful too.
everybody wants a picture! We're going to take the pics back with us on a disc so the nieghborhood can have it to look at together some night
Last day in Petite Goave...
going back towards P-au-P to go visit a school
we got to hike a little because the school is on top of a mountain outside the city
the bay
a cactus tree? I guess...?
Daniel's got quite a crowd of onlookers!
the guide who took us up the mountain (who's obviously not in school) with his little sister, who does get to go to the school
she was pretty shy
oh yeah, we got a bunch of footage during the trip and there's going to be a video - keep an eye out for that
Making flowers for leis the next day
duck-duck-goose = a big hit with this group of kids
and follow-the-leader for the youger ones. rock
tree
fish
goat - it's hard when you don't know too many Creole words
took out the camera again - everyone wanted thier picture again
These are all kids that live in the area outside P-au-P
Years ago, Thony started working with a group of guys at this site
and it grew from those ten guys to a couple hundred kids which were there when we went with Thony
so that's what investing in a few kids did!
Thony rapping
we made up after our bubble war - it was a day-long thing
and everyone went home!
Thony took us to this amazing little restaurant and then we packed up and left the next morning! More pics to come when i get back from the 2nd leg of the trip...
