FLOATING by Dianne Firth - When I go to the beach the activity that delights me most is floating on gentle waves.
ESMERALDA EMU’S NIGHT ON THE TOWN by Wendy Vermeulen Many a fancy is tickled by feathers and champagne bubbles. So too is Esmeralda Emu’s as she prepares for her fanciful night out on the town. She begins by fluffing her feathers, putting on her red hat and pouring a glass of champagne which she enjoys under a starry, starry night sky.
HUNTER VALLEY BALLOON RIDE by Dorothy Davis - A beautiful ride in a hot air balloon tickled my fancy. The beauty of the early morning drifting through the clouds over the majestic mountains and vineyards while testing the fruit of the vines.
FIELDS OF GRANDKIDS by Elizabeth Long - This challenge set me thinking of my nine grandchildren and Rebekah, who died some years ago. The Sunflower fabric had such large centres that I thought I could put faces onto them. After printing my photos to fabric from my computer, I ‘thread painted’ the petals to appliqué the faces down and free motion quilted leaves and petals. This small quilt shows all my grandkids, happy together in “Grandma’s Garden”
FOOT LOOSE & FANCY FREE by Jocelyne Leath - What tickles my fancy? To dream… to kick off my shoes, to sit on the beach, to feel the sand between my toes, to soak in the sun, to watch the sun set, to laugh with friends, to be carefree, to relax and to enjoy today… Fancy that! Whole cloth quilt done with Prismacolor pencils and fixed with medium. Finely machine quilted. Drawn from a photograph taken by my daughter.
FOTOFLOWERFANCY by Jennifer Ramsay - The “foto” flowers were made by placing fresh flowers face down on my photocopier and then covered by background material. The twisting chain and floral material effectively frame my photos which “tickle my fancy”.
CAPTURING THE MOMENT by Kay D. Haerland -I love photographing the moods and expressions of nature… and this Kangaroo Island charmer certainly “tickled my fancy”.
THIS ‘TIKI-ED’ MY FANCY by Nancy Parkinson - “What tickles your fancy” quickly changed into what “tickied” my fancy? & the answer became “This Tiki-ed my fancy”. Using NZ design material given to me as a gift from a New Zealander & a pattern from Mary Metcalf of Kiwi Quilts. This is the result.
IN SPRING A YOUNG MAN’S FANCY TURNS TO LOVE by Marilyn Lowder - On one side a young man sleeps against a leafless tree in winter dreaming of football and hoping his team will win the cup. On the other side the young man sleeps against a tree covered in spring flowers dreaming of love and hoping he will win a lady’s heart.
FEATHERS DO! by Carolyn Sullivan - The feather embroidery is based on a drawing of a small ostrich feather I did many years ago. Feathers tickle… my fancy.
TEXTURE, COLOUR & DESIGN by Judith Thompson - Texture, colour and design are ‘What tickle my fancy’ and I had great fun incorporating all three for this quilt.
TICKLE? A FEATHER OF COURSE! by Glenda Wise - I’ve been wanting to try out a feather for some time so when this challenge came up my choice was ready. I painted the background and spotted a magnified picture on the internet so had to include it.
FANCY A CUPCAKE? by Glenda Wise - My cupcakes are presented on my best fine bone china plate. Someone has been unable to resist taking a bite.
BARRAMUNDI by Kerryn A. Taylor - I fancy a fillet of freshly caught barramundi, dusted in flour, pan fried in garlic and butter and served with boiled new potatoes and a salad of home-grown tomatoes and herbs.
FANCY FABRIC by Janine Dixon - Some of the things that tickle my fancy are • fabric (I have woven my fabric from strips of commercial fabrics) • bright clear colours • spots and dots and most of all • HAVING FUN Making this little quilt was lots of fun!
FRAGMENTS by Lyn Barber - I fancy fine glass creations but their fragility frightens me. This work was inspired by a multicoloured Roman glass mosaic bowl from 1st Century AD and the striations found in the murrine work of contemporary Italian artist, Vittorio Ferro.
QUIRKY CHICKS Margaret Wallace- The almost Meccano like form of Aztec design has always ‘tickled my fancy’ – especially their flora and fauna. I have endeavoured to represent the colours that they (the Aztecs) may have chosen for the ‘Jabiru’ style of bird
MY AUSTRALIAN GARDEN Cissa Kamakura - I love fabrics, colours, quilts and geometric shapes. I always enjoy kaleidoscope types of quilts. The fabric with Australian native flowers was hard to resist. It really tickled my fancy. The quilt will be a wonderful memory piece to remind my husband and myself of our time in Australia. I am ‘tickled pink’ with such an opportunity to make this quilt.
REJECTED Julie Smith - “Rejection” was devised with the idea that it can also be a great thing. Life always takes you in different directions.
CHASING PEACOCKS Sue Dennis - “Chasing Peacocks” uses the rubbings from Indian wood blocks to create the pattern on the whole cloth background. Machine quilted with metallic thread.
WHIMSY by Kay Sieff - Helen Godden’s “Sunflowers” inspired me to give this technique a go. Painting the whole cloth, then quilting and embellishing with childish enthusiasm. It was a totally whimsical process for me, full of learning and wonder. Oh, such fun. A flight of fancy! Created to celebrate LIFE!
A LITTLE OF WHAT YOU FANCY DOES YOU GOOD by Sue Power - “A little of what you fancy does you good.” Quotation: Miss Marie Lloyd, an Edwardian Music Hall star.
WHAT TICKLES YOUR FANCY? Lynn Hewitt - My fancy is to wear these shoes, but my feet won’t let me.
A ROLLICKING GOOD LAUGH! Yvonne Line - Laughter is the best medicine!
FEATHER FOLLY Brenda Gael Smith - I struggled with this theme but was keen to try some improvisational pieced feathers and some quilted feather motifs. I almost turned the back into the ‘front’ and still don’t know if I made the right choice!
ETERNITY NOW Mary Whitton - I was inspired by the chalk written “Eternity” on Sydney streets in 1950 by Arthur Stace which started my 60 year search for an answer – perhaps every time is “NOW
FISH PEDICURE Amanda Daly - A friend recently returned from Singapore with tales of the newest trend in pedicures. With feet immersed in water, hundreds of tiny fish nibble away at the dead skin, now that tickles. I have a mental image of glamorous fish also painting toe nails underwater and that really tickles my fancy.
MR BUNNY IN A BLIZZARD Brett Bridger - When I was in Primary School, a common joke went something like this. Did you know I am an Artist? (Uhh, No) Would you like to see some of my recent drawings? (Uhh, Suppose) You then give them a blank white sheet of paper and a blank black piece of paper (Wait for puzzled look on their faces) Can’t you see what it is? (Whatever their answer) It’s a white rabbit in a snow storm and the same bunny at night! This joke has always been a favourite, so it was a natural topic for “Whatever tickles your fancy”, and, yes, if you turn it over and look at the back, you will see the night version.
FINE FEATHERED FRIENDS Jane Gibson - And a water view. I was delighted to find these fabrics – hand printed in Australia by young designers. The Eastern Swamp Hens remind me of our creek near Goulburn which is a great place for water birds.
TWO UP Val Duncan NFS DURAL NSW 2158 The antics of ducks always amuse me. It is almost synchronized swimming! The whole quilt is raw-edge appliqué.
MY SECRET GARDEN Ann Archer NFS PENNANT HILLS NSW 2120 It’s the small things in the garden that ‘tickle my fancy’. The flowers that struggle through the weeds, the tiny bugs, delicate butterflies and the cheeky birds. Four A4 sized quilts that began life as a group challenge have been sewn together and embellished to look like a view through a window.
