One Day Birthday for All the Children May 2012

In May Chiatura Institution Children celebrated the Birthday for All! That happened with Help of a Donor! They had Much Fun! Beautiful cakes were of particular joy for the Children!

APRIL 2012

Tamuna visited Chiatura in early April and was pleased to see the children doing so well. They are healthy thanks to the medicines and nutritional food that Sponsor a Child provides. In March Vaso delivered the Advent Workshop gifts sent from PRUMC children. They love getting gifts. A donor is hosting a Birthday Party for all the children ~ a day of games, dancing, fancy cakes and gifts ~ they requested water guns. :-). They continue to work out with the exercise equipment which strengthens their muscles. They love the playground which UNICEF build. We are grateful.

Christmas JOY 2011

On December 20th Santa paid a long-awaited visit to the children and youth at Chiatura!!! OH, they were thrilled. He brought bags filled with fruit and candy ~ and little gifts. It was a day of singing and laughter!! Truly Joy-Filled!

FALL 2011 MISSION Team VISIT

The Fall Mission team spent a fun-filled day with the children of Chiatura. We always try to "teach" while we have art projects and this year we read "The Hungry Caterpillar" and talked about butterflies. The children drew pictures of butterflies and the older children painted a large canvas which will hang in their hallway! They loved the wooden blocks which we had made in country & we are ordering more so they can build tall towers! Outside we played with a parachute and played ball. Of course face painting is always a huge treat! The cooks were given their embroidered aprons which were made by the PRUMC Sewing Guild & each child received a warm, knitted hat also made by our ladies. Each child also received their own handknit doll lovingly made by Roseann. We also handed out bananas which are a delicacy! We just had fun playing and loving! The children are healthy and growing - enjoying the playground UNICEF gave them! We were delighted to see this.

Seaside Treat July 2011

The children at Chiatura had an experience of a lifetime. The government offered free housing for an excursion to the seashore but did not provide funds for transportation. Without the generosity of a donor, this incredible experience would never have been possible. Those Chiatura children who could travel, along with Murman and his staff and caregivers, went to the Black Sea! They stayed in Ureki but traveled to the resorts of Kobuleti and Batumi. They went to a Dolphin park, planetarium, amusement park, and historical museum! But the highlight undoubtedly was the Beach on the Black Sea. Murman & the caregivers went to a farmers market every day, purchased food and prepared it for the children. It was a grand experience for all. A special thanks to our donor who made this all possible!

MAY & JUNE 2011

Tamuna visited Chiatura in late May and found the children healthy and happy! They were using the new rehab (exercise) equipment and they can already see a difference ~ more strength and even Tinatin and Giorgi have taken a few steps! The potty chairs make it much easier for the children and caregivers and are used primarily. This winter the children stayed healthy and they attribute it to the fresh fruit, vegetables and meats. Since several of these children are true orphans and have no place to go, Murman is having "summer camp" and the children will stay - thanks to you, our Sponsors. We are blessed to have such a dedicated Director and staff.

Rehab Equipment MAY 2011

Thanks to the generosity of two donors, Chiatura, for the first time, has some exercise/rehab equipment. It is hard to believe that they have had nothing up until now to exercise their muscles. We already have two success stories ~ not only are these disabled children exercising their muscles, but it is also mentally and emotionally helpful. The children are using the equipment under strict supervision so they do not injure themselves. Chiatura, unfortunately, is not handicap-equipped at all. This if the first ever they have been able to work on improving themselves.

April 2011

The children at Chiatura continue to thrive under the care of the Sponsor a Child program! The nutritional food and medicines have kept them healthy through the flu season. A special treat was Terry Sherali's visit. She brought candies and delivered toys sent by PRUMC through the Advent Workshop! There is also a picture of Tinatin, who has been wheelchair-bound, and who had surgery and took her first few steps this month! A private donor also funded the purchase of portable potty chairs, which is a huge gift considering they only have "turkish/squat" toilets.

FEBRUARY 2011

Tamuna visited Chiatura at the end of January and was eager to meet the new children who have been brought from all parts of Georgia. The government has moved out many of our children and brought in severely handicapped children. The need for medicine is even greater now, as is equipment for the handicapped. There are no grab rails ~ the facility was not designed for handicapped children. Tamuna delivered new leather shoes and the children were delighted. They carried them around all day long. There are many new needs - more heaters, blankets, bed linens, clothing. We would also love to get exercise equipment and help hire caregivers/therapists. The needs are great.

CHRISTMAS JOY 2010

On December 23rd Father Christmas/Snow Granny and Vaso delivered PRUMC Christmas Joy to the children and youth at Chiatura. These photos really say it all ~ the joy and love that you provide is not quantifiable. This is the only Christmas the children receive. All the warm hats were hand-made by ladies of Carteret United Methodist Church in Beaufort, SC. They lovingly knit these hats, blankets and scarves all year long and we take them with us when we go. These areoutward and visable signs of the caring by friends 9000 miles away. This is what Christmas is all about!

NOVEMBER 2010 at CHIATURA

The government has yet again re-organized. They have moved the healthier Chiatura children to other institutions and moved severely handicapped children to Chiatura. All 33 are very disabled. Of course nutritional food and medicines are essential. Thanks to Sponsor a Child even the new children are gaining weight and much healthier. Private donors have purchased 2 wheelchairs, 2 walkers & 2 potty chairs. Another donor pays for the electricity for all our institutions for the winter months so the children can have heat. Another donor funded new leather shoes for all, and yet another balls. We did not label all the photos, but they are self-explanatory. To be with these children is pure Joy!!

FALL 2010 MISSION TRIP to CHIATURA

On September 30th the 13 member of the Fall Mission team spent a wonderful day at Chiatura. It was quite cool since it is in the mountainous area - once a manganese mining town. It was great to see all our children and we had lots of arts & Crafts planned. Murman, the Director, is such a compassionate and wonderful director ~ as is his staff. The children decorated foam visors with sticky animals and figurines. They also made Rainbow Fish ~ our interpreter read the children's story and then they created their own fish with sequins. They love anything sparkly. We gave out hand-knitted dolls. A PRUMC member hand-knit 100 dolls for the children of our institutions!!! They loved these cuddly, pretty dolls. Outside we bundled up and had face painting. We also had a huge parachute and even the children in wheelchairs could grab ahold to an edge and play. Others "played" basketball or just threw a ball for catch. It was a wonderful day indeed.

JUNE CHIATURA

Tamuna visited Chiatura on June 7th andwas so pleased to see the children healthy and doing well, thanks to the loving care of Murman and his staff. He even took the children on a picnic! Tamuna is also sharing photos of two of the "homes" from which some of these children come ~ where they do not even have electricity, gas, water, let alone radio or even bed linens. We were so fortunate this year that the children made it through the winter without major illnesses. The greatest need right now is for sturdy leather shoes and a wheelchair for one of the children with cerebral palsy. We also need extra funding for hygiene, cleaning supplies. Thanks to PRUMC the children are healthy and well-cared for.

MARCH Chiatura

The children at Chiatura will absolutely win your heart! Most are handicapped ~ there are a few at Chiatura who are "normal" but have no other place to go. We have many more wheel-chair children this year. Murman, the Director, and his staff are so loving and caring. Many of the children need constant care and watchful eyes. Bed linens often need to be replaced. We hope to raise money for blankets and other daily needs. As you see, these children are healthy and definitely happy!!! Pure Joy!

FEBRUARY 2010 Visit to CHIATURA

Tamuna was blessed with a gorgeous winter day when she visited Chiatura. She was delighted to see the children so healthy and so very happy! Murman and his staff are amazing and shower these children with love. Tamuna delivered PRUMC's Advent Workshop gifts and the children were thrilled. The children receive nutritious meals and necessary medicines which their parents could not begin to afford. In fact in January and February Chiatura received nothing from the State Government - had it not been for Sponsor a Child these children would have had no food at all. DECEMBER CHRISTMAS JOY at CHIATURA

Thanks to Peachtree Road's Christmas Kindness, the Children of Chiatura were able to celebrate Christmas with Father Christmas/Snow Granny. They received gift bags filled with fruit, candy and a little gift and the day was filled with music, dance, presents and lots of laughter. Thanks to Peachtree Road these children and their families were treated to true Christmas Spirit!

NOVEMBER 2009 CHIATURA

An essentail part of Sponsor a Child is an annual medical check up. Doctors traveled to Chiatura for blood tests and other general check-ups. Vaso also delivered the notes you wrote along with other drawings from children from Westminster School! The Team had such a great day at Chiatura - we played ball, played with a huge parachute and painted bandanas! We were so pleased to see the children healthy, happy and growing! They now anxiously await Father Christmas and Christmas Joy from PRUMC!

FALL MISSION TEAM CHIATURA October 2, 2009

On Friday October 2nd the Team of 13 traveled to Chiatura where we were greeted by all the Youth and some new children. Several were in wheel chairs, but as we soon found out, they loved holding on to (playing with ) the large parachute. The team brought supplies, school and hygiene kits from UMCOR, sports items, lots of balls, balloons, stickers and tattoos. The day flew by as we painted bandanas, played soccer, gave tattoos and blew up balloons and bubbles. Some of the children just liked being held. The personal interaction and attention is so important for these particularly fragile children. It was hard to say good-bye, but the Georgian (Kartuli) word is: Nachwamdis, which means "until we see one another again." Indeed ~ we hope it will be soon!

June 2009 Chiatura

Thanks to Sponsor a Child the nutritional food and medicines continue to be delivered to Chiatura. The needs of these children, being severely handicapped, is even greater than our other children. Murman and his staff take such loving care of each one. Hopefully you will see your child. The first photo is of Mickeil (Mishiko) Tkemaladze ~ whom Tamuna profiled. These children are growing and healthy ~ all thanks to you! We are truly indebted and grateful!

MARCH 2009 Visit CHIATURA

Tamuna visited Chiatura March 23rd in the midst of a snowstorm. Everyone eagerly awaited her visit ~ the children prepared a patriotic performance ~dance, song and drama! She brought "Hospital Art" from hospitalart.org here in Atlanta. We shipped these panels from Atlanta and Tamuna delivered them! The facility was very clean and water was working. As with the other institutions, Chiatura was not given any assistance whatsoever for Jan., Feb or March from the state government. Thanks to Sponsor a Child the children,however, had food and medicine! Thankfully, Chiatura will receive new government medical vouchers which will free Sponsorship monies to buy much needed bedding, mattresses and blankets. The DVD, bikes and vacuum cleaners (private donors) were all working well. The children also were proudly wearing their new clothes that a private donor purchased for them. Murman, our wonderful Director, is most grateful to PRUMC for all their support of the children and Chiatura!

JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2009 CHIATURA

The Sponsor-a-Child efforts continue at Chiatura and the winter months mean it is even more crucial that the children receive medical care and medicines, in addition to nutritional food. Murman has traveled to Tbilisi numerous times trying to get more government assistance, but to no avail. Murman and his staff remain dedicated to these precious, marginalized children. A wonderful treat in February was the delivery of hand-made Christmas cards and little toys which were created and made by PRUMC Children in the Advent Workshop! It was quite a surprise and you see the Chiatura children were thrilled!

CHRISTMAS JOY Dec 2008

Every year PRUMC's Christmas Kindness outreach funds a Christmas Extravaganza for our children. Without the generosity of so many, the children would have no Christmas at all. As you can see, this is also a day of celebration for the Staff ~ our thanks for their dedicated and selfless care they give these precious children. Father Christmas arrives with costumes and decorations. Vaso and his family make gift bags for each child and there is a feast of pork, fried potatoes, Khachapuri (cheese bread), fancy cakes, and even soft drinks! This is a day which the children never forget. Notice how bundled the children and adults are....and they are inside! It is very cold and snowy in the mountains of Chiatura and there is no central heat -- but we have been able to purchase a few heaters for them. We have a private donor who is paying for the utility bills at each of our 5 institutions! It was a Merry Christmas indeed!

CHIATURA November 2008

The attached photos are from our recent visit the end of October and also from Vaso's visits. The team helped the children paint/draw a mural and they also made necklances with beads. We also handed out bananas and balls ~ and, of course, always stickers and balloons. Murman and his staff take such excellent care of this at-risk and challenged children! They are happy and very healthy and we were most pleased!! All the renovations and things we have done over the years are in excellent shape. We are now trying to find a major donor to renovate the kitchen and dining hall! It was wonderful to see "our children" so happy.

CHIATURA JUNE 2008

On June 17th Tamuna visited Chiatura and arrived right at dinnertime. Thanks to Sponsor a Child they enjoyed a meal of cutlets with gravy, tomatoes & cucumbers, and soup. The happy faces say it all! The children are still enjoying the clothing, shoes and slippers we provided in April & May. These children are from one of the poorest regions and the clothing, medical care and dental care we provide is the only care they receive. Misha, the 9 year old is new and has not really been "assigned" to Chiatura. He is severely handicapped & his adoptive mother just died at age 40. At least at Chiatura he will be surrounded by love and caring.

APRIL 2008 PHOTOS

As part of Sponsor-a-Child, you provide nutritional food, medical care, medicines, dental care, shoes, clothes and hygiene items. Photos of the happy recipients say a 1000 words. This past winter was the harshest since 1911 and Chiatura was isolated much of the winter. The utility bills were astronomical, and without our assitance there would have been no heat. A private donor paid for a gas line to be run to the Institution, but we paid the fuel bills. The Director Murman does an outstanding job in using local help for projects. He is very resourceful and always has the very best interests of the children at heart. In the bedroom building he has built several prayer corners where the children can pray - surrounded by Icons and the Cross. Even though most of the children at Chiatura are mentally and/or physically challenged, they are some of the happiest and joy-filled children we serve. We wish you all could experience Chiatura!

Chiatura Album

Loren Emery, a friend of PRUMC, joined our teams in the beginning years. His expertise with our Georgia National Guard in Rep of Georgia was invaluable. Loren visited Vaso this winter and was amazed at the improvement in the children's health and the institutions. He visited Chiatura where he put in a well pump - bringing water for the very first time to this institution high on the mountain.

Christmas Joy CHIATURA 2007

Every Christmas PRUMC treats each child and the caregivers to a Christmas Feast. Father Christmas comes and there is a banquet fit for a queen/king. We have costumes and masks - the children perform and Father Christmas also comes bearing a gift bag for each child ~ fruit, candy, paper, pen......little toys! FALL TEAM VISIT 2007

The Fall Team spent an entire Saturday at Chiatura! It is always a delight! The children, many of whom are handicapped, are SO loving! We played soccer and basketball until everyone was exhausted - we had bubbles and balloons. The art projects were a huge hit - they painted a canvas with their hand prints and Murman, the Director, immediately hung it in the Classroom/Dining Hall building. The children painted their own personal pillow case and a grand time was had by all. We distributed School Bags from UMCOR and a banana to each child before we left.

Sponsor - a Child 2007 Photos

The Sponsor-a-Child Program has made such an incredible difference in the well-being and lives of these precious children. Thanks to our generous Sponsors the Chiatura children receive nutrititonal food. They have regular check-ups and we provide all their medicines. These children have more medical needs than most. We have also started full dental care (the first time in their lives). We have also purchased warm coats. A private donor gave money for a Gas pipeline and PRUMC has paid their utility bills which have been high. This was the worst winter since 1911 and Chiatura is in the mountains.

May Renovation 2007

A Peace Corps volunteer from Atlanta, Maggie, was assigned to "our" Chiatura and together we partnered to renovate many of the halls and classrooms. The transformation was amazing. Murman, the Director, is fabulous. He is devoted to the children and partners with us in providing much of the labor if we can provide the resources. Chiatura is in a mountainous region and this institution is home to mentally and physically challenged children ~ wonderful children!
