PNGC 2009 Celebration and Farewell Function

On Wednesday August 12th, we held the PNGC 2009 Awards Ceremony and celebration. Combined with this was a village-wide farewell function for us. It turned into quite an event and that, once it started, lasted over 5 hours!

PNGC 2009 Week 7

This week the girls started sewing their aprons and made link bracelets with beads that were a donation from Lincoln Park Preschool in Chicago. They also enjoyed their Starburst candy brought over by Barry and Pam during their visit in April.

Dad and Mom Visit South Africa

Dad and Mom visited South Africa for three weeks around the Easter holiday. We spent time in the Graskop area, on safari in Kruger, in Seleka, Cape Town, and Victoria Falls.

PNGC Week 16

This was the last week of PNGC for 2008! It has been a wonderful year and we ended with a great week. The lesson was on Fetal Development and the girls finished up their aprons and completed a few craft items to sell as a fundraiser for next year.

Mary and Vanessa Visit

Mary and Vanessa, Jessica's mother and sister, came to visit us for over two weeks here in South Africa! They saw our village, explored parts of Lesotho and South Africa, went on safari and more.

PNGC Week 11

This week we had visitors from the United States! Our good friends Chanda (US) and her husband Jacobus (RSA) stopped by their friends from the Ken and Pam (US) to see club in action. The girls this week learned about Respecting Elders and continued to finish their HIV/AIDS ribbon beaded pins.

PNGC Week 7

This week's lesson was titled 'Sex vs. Abstinence' and was a very important lesson for the girls. Despite the tough subject matter the lesson went very well and the girls really seemed to take a lot of information away from it. After the lesson the learned to decoupage their own pencil holders. Lots of glue=sticky afternoon!

Cape Town Road Trip

Jess and I spent two weeks with our friend Brandon and Rachel Johnson driving to CapeTown and back. We stayed at a number of places along the way, enjoyed the National Arts Festival, went on a day drive through Addo Elephant National Park, made it to the southernmost point of Africa, explored Cape Town, Table Mountain, Robben Island, and relaxed in Stellenbosch by tasting wine. It was a great trip with great friends.

PNGC Week 4 (A Young Woman's Body)

This week's lesson was about 'A Young Woman's Body'. The girls had a great, though at sometimes shy, discussion. They then began to make their picture frames to hold the picture of the whole group we took on Invitation Day! Everyone was very proud of their original designs.

Teaching 5th Grade

This term Jessica and I have been teaching Math and Technology for 5th grade at Seleka Higher Primary School. The school is currently looking to fill the position left open when a teacher retired after the first term of this year. It has been exhilirating and exhausting each day and we love it. Here are some highlights from class with our kids!

PNGC Week 2 - Peer Pressure

Week two at PNGC focused on Peer Pressure. The lesson was led by Mma Motebele and the girls made friendship bracelets. In the two weeks since this lesson and craft, many girls have come to us for more thread to make many bracelets to give to friends and family. We are excited to see they are enjoying themselves!

PNGC Week 3 - Inward Beauty vs. Outward Appearance

This week at PNGC the girls discussed Inward Beauty vs. Outward Appearance and made beaded name necklaces to wear. When talking about people who they thought had both inward beauty and was beautiful outside, the first name that came up in the discussion was Mma Makhura! Everyone cheered and laughed. What a fun week of bonding at club.

Seleka Higher Primary Sports Day

On Wednesday, Seleka Higher Primary hosted a sports day against a school from our neighboring town, Lephalale. The girls netball teams faced off as well as the boys soccer teams. The whole school was let out at noon to go watch the matches and support their friends. It was a beautiful day to be out on the field.

April Vacation

On our two week vacation we ran the Longtom Half Marathon, drove through the Blyde River Canyon, visited Kruger National Park and enjoyed time with some friends at their sites.

Chanda and Jacobus' Farm

On March 15, 2008 Paul, Brandon, Rachel and I spent the day with Chanda and Jacobus on the family farm. Chanda is originally from MN and met Jacobus when during the 9 years he lived there. They actually owned a farm right outside of Nerstrand, about 15 miles from our old family farm! We spent the day relaxing, going on a game drive, and having a braai as the sun began to set.

Jolene's Baby Shower

Jolene, a friend from town, had her baby shower on Saturday, March 8th. Rachel and I were so pleased to help her celebrate in anticipation of their first baby!
