Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar's Ayeyarwady delta region on May 2, 2008. Over 84,500 lives were lost, untold millions were injured and hundreds of thousands were left homeless. An estimated 50-60% of public schools (like the one pictured) were destroyed or damaged.
Plan is currently working in Myanmar with three local partners - Bridge Asia Japan, Metta Foundation, and Yinthway Foundation - as well as UNESCO. The completed school pictured above is located in Bon Ti Lut.
Through local partnerships, Plan's post-Nargis recovery and rehabilitation efforts have focused on the construction and renovation of schools and early childhood care and development centers, the provision of psychosocial support and trauma healing services, and disaster risk and reduction planning.
Our work is concentrated in villages in the townships of Myaungmya, Lebutta, Mawlamyingyun and Bogale in the Ayeyarwady delta region.
Of the 32 schools completed, three of the schools located in particularly remote areas (including Hlee Toelo, pictured above) have library facilities to facilitate learning.
Early childhood care and development (ECCD) centers have been built to help provide safe and secure environments for preschool children and parents. This ECCD center in ThaeKone village was supported by Plan and built by Yinthway.
Preschool teachers and parent education facilitators have received training in the management of the centers, in early childhood care, and in psychosocial and trauma healing of young children.
Plan would like to thank all the individuals, corporations and groups across the world for their caring and concern for the children and families affected by Cyclone Nargis.
