BRIGHT school in the Kaya Province of Burkina Faso
Separate latrines for boys and girls help increase attendance rates
Housing units are built for teachers to entice them into villages, away from urban areas
The BRIGHT project seeks to encourage regular school attendance in both boys and girls
Three child-friendly classrooms come equipped with furniture and textbooks
Classes are comprised of both girls and boys
BRIGHT schools are designed to be girl-friendly and provide incentives to remove barriers to girls’ education
Fewer than half of all girls in Burkina Faso attend school
Long walking distances, early marriages, time-consuming household chores and lack of interest in educating girls are some of the barriers that keep thousands of girls from going to school
Regular attendance is encouraged in girls; every girl with a 90% attendance rate is given take-home rations that are intended to replace the work they do at home
Community members gather with Plan USA staff to talk about what BRIGHT means to them

Each BRIGHT school is built with spaces that can be used as temporary classrooms or for community gatherings
Community members use these spaces for special interest activities, such as the PTO and a community development organization
