San Francisco ChinaTown@Night

12/30/07 and New Year's Eve at ChinaTown in San Francisco. WikiPedia sez: San Francisco's Chinatown is one of North America's largest Chinatowns. It is also the oldest Chinatown in the United States. Established in the 1850s, it has featured significantly in popular culture venues such as film, music, photography and literature. It is one of the largest and most prominent centers of Chinese activity outside of China. It remains a major tourist attraction — drawing more visitors than the Golden Gate Bridge.

JapanTown, San Franscisco

The first Japanese arrived in San Francisco -- or Soko as they called it -- in the early 1860s. Many lived in Chinatown and in neighborhoods south of Market Street. The 1906 earthquake and fire drove many of them from their homesand they began moving to the Western Addition. They built churches and shrines and opened typically Japanese shops and restaurants. The neighborhood took on a very Japanese character and before long became a miniature Ginza known as Nihonmachi, or Japantown. It is here that the foundations of San Francisco's Japanese American community took root. With the advent of World War II, Japanese Americans in San Francisco and in other West Coast communities suddenly were uprooted and interned in what was one of the great tragedies of the War. After the War, many of the original Japanese American residents returned to the city to pick up the threads of their lives. Today, nearly 12,000 Japanese Americans live in San Francisco, with 80,000 in the greater Bay Area.

Winchester Mystery House

I wrote about the Winchester Mystery House for a travelogue assignment for my undergrad features writing class in J-school -- signt unseen. I read everything I could get my hands on at the time, to write a tavelogue that gained a decent A. I swore that I will one day visit the house -- and I can't believe I finally made it! wheeeeee! "In 1884, a wealthy widow named Sarah L. Winchester began a construction project of such magnitude that it was to occupy the lives of carpenters and craftsmen until her death 38 years later. Sarah Winchester built a home that is an architectural marvel. Unlike most homes of its era, this 160-room Victorian mansion had modern heating and sewer systems, gas lights that operated by pressing a button, three working elevators, and 47 fireplaces. From rambling roofs and exquisite hand inlaid parquet floors to the gold and silver chandeliers and Tiffany art glass windows ... "

Wildwood Recreation Site and Cascade Streamwatch

Wildwood is a day-use recreation site located just east of milepost 39, off U.S. Highway 26. Nearly 600 acres in size, Wildwood is nestled in the forested foothills of the Cascades along the Salmon National Wild and Scenic River. Wildwood is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and offers family and group picnic facilities, ball fields and a play area. The park also features miles of trails, including the accessible Cascade Streamwatch Interpretive Trail and the Wildwood Wetland Boardwalk Trail. Visitors can also access the Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness from the Boulder Ridge Trailhead located in the park.

Mount Hood

The Mount Hood National Forest is located 20 miles (32 km) east of the city of Portland, Oregon, and the northern Willamette River valley. The Forest extends south from the Columbia River Gorge across more than 60 miles (97 km) of forested mountains, lakes and streams to the Olallie Scenic Area, a high lake basin under the slopes of Mount Jefferson. The Forest encompasses some 1,067,043 acres. Visitors to the Forest can enjoy fishing, camping, boating and hiking in the summer, hunting in the fall, and skiing and other snow sports in the winter. Berry-picking and mushroom collection are popular, and for many area residents, a trip in December to cut the family's Christmas tree is a long-standing tradition.
