Camberwell vs Pyrenees Weekend July 17-18, 2010
In bone-chilling 7-degree weather with piercing winds, the Pyrenees country folks journeyed down to the Big Smoke July 17-18 and edged closer to taking home the trophy, missing by just two games.
Sixty games were played in the head-to-head team competition on Sunday (July 18), meaning that half plus one was needed to take home the well-used and somewhat rusty old tape measure that serves as a trophy in the annual competition. The visitors won 29 of the 60 games, which is about as close as one can come to winning.
The Pyrenees mob traveled down to our venue in a hired bus, and on Satrurday afternoon the two sides drew names from a hat and played mixed-team doubles, which gave of all a chance to socialize a bit and play the kind of loosey-goosey petanque that is played without the pressure of needing to defend team honor. The competition got a bit more intense on Sunday, but even then laughter could be heard across the pistes during play.
