Nicula Monastery, Transylvania, Romania
This monastery, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, treasures the miracle-working Nicula Icon of the Mother of God that yearly draws 300,000 people for the Feast of the Dormition on August 15th. The Metropolitan of Cluj lives here. We (my traveling partner Herman Middleton, our friend here Florin-Catalin Ghit, and myself) were blessed to lead the procession for the Feast of Theophany, 2008 (New Calendar). Early in the service of the Consecration of the Waters, snow from the roof eave under which we were standing came down on our heads. You can see the clergy and others trying to hold back laughter. It was a funny moment. There were over 400 people at the monastery for the Feast of Theophany.
