Divine Liturgy in Eupen (German-speaking Community of Belgium) - Nov. 14, 2009 - in the presence of His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon of Belgium, the Minister-President of the German-speaking Community, Mr. Karl-Heinz Lambertz, and the Mayor of Eupen, Mr. Elmar Keutgen. The Divine Liturgy was presided over by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of SInope, assistant of theMetropolitan of Belgium, in concelebration with the Archpriest of the Ecumenical Throne Constantine Miron, Archpriest Aurel Popescu, Priests Diomidis Doulgerakis, Emmanuel Kazilas, Emmanuel Karasavidis and Athanasios Palaskas and Deacon Ciprian Popescu. The Liturgy was mostly served in german and sung in different languages. One noted also the presence of the Roman-catholic dean of Eupen, Rev. Helmut Schmitz, and the pastor of the protestant community.

Patronal Feast of the Brussels Orthodox Cathedral - November 8th, 2009 - Synaxis of the Archangels, presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon of Belgium and Exarch of the Netherlands and Luxemburg, assisted by Their Excellencies Metropolitan Athanasios of Achaïa (Director of the Office of the Church of Greece) and Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope, in the presence of dimplomats, representatives of the Nato and a crowd of people. At the end of the Divine Liturgy followed a Doxology for the Ecumenical Patriarchate and a new archont was blessed. Gathering of the 'Orthodox Youth of Belgium' in 'De Kluis' - Oct.16-18, 2009

Gathering of the 'Orthodox Youth of Belgium' in 'De Kluis', Sint-Joris-Weert (near Leuven) - Oct.16-18, 2009 - under the very theme "Keep thy mind in hell, and despair not", out of the writings of Saint Silouan the Athonite. This subject was developped by Father Dominique Verbeke (Ghent). Other interventions were given by Deacon Ciprian Popescu (Brussels, responsible of the 'Orthodox Youth of Belgium'), Father Patriciu Vlaicu (Brussels) and Mother Maria (Asten). The opening of the gathering was presided over by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope, who gave an introduction and read a message of His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon of Belgium (Ecumenical Patriarchate). Some 70 young persons from Belgium and abroad took part at the gathering. Vespers and Divine Liturgy were presided over by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras in concelebration with priests and deacons, and sung by the young participants themselves.

The Ecumenical legacy of Johannes Cardinal Willebrands - International Centenary Conference in Utrecht, The Netherlands (2-5 Sept. 2009), with the participation of Their Eminences Cardinal Walter Kasper (Pontifical Council for promoting Unity of Christians - Vatican) and Metropolitan John (Zizioulas) of Pergamon (co-president of the dialogue between Roman-Catholic and Orthodox Churches - Ecumenical Patriarchate). Among the other orthodox present we mention: His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope (Ecumenical Patriarchate), Archbishop Theophan (hierarch of the moscow Patriarchate residing in Berlin) and priests from the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Patriarchates of Moscow and Romania. On September 4th, 2009, orthodox matins were sung in greek in the Cathedral of the Old-Catholic Church.

His Eminence Metropolitan Makarios payed also a visit to His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon of Belgium, in the presence of His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope, and to the Liaison Office of the Orthodox Church to the European Union (Ecumenical Patriarchate), where he met with the Rev. Deacon Emilianos Bogiannou.

Conference for code for Holy Sites - Trondheim (Norway) – July 27-29, 2009 - Churches, Mosques and Synagogues are being used by political leaders to spread hatred in war and conflict. From July 27-29, 2009 religious leaders, academics, international organizations and politicians from the Middle East, the Balkans and Turkey gathered in Trondheim to create a code to protect holy sites and turn them into bacons of peace. They discussed the role of holy sites in the conflict. At the conference His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew was represented by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope, assistant bishop of the Metropolis of Belgium. The Patriarchate of Serbia was represented by His Grace Bishop Teodosij of Decanij, abbot of the Holy Monastery of Decanij, and Father Sava of the same Monastery, the Patriarchate of Romania by His Grace Bishop Macarie, bishop serving in Scandinavia, and the Patriarchate of Bulgaria by Prof. Dr Ivan Dimitrov.

Patronal feast of St. Irene Chrysovalantou in Astoria, New York - July 23-28, 2009 - Also this year the great feast and annual celebration of The Sacred Patriarchal & Stavropegial Monastery of St. Irene Chrysovalantou in Astoria, New York attracts thousands of faithful to venerate the Miraculous Weeping Icon of the Saint. The feast brings to Astoria thousands of people from all over North America, to witness the lively presence of the Saint, and Her obvious and famous miracles. On Saturday July 25th and on Sunday July 26th Vespers and Divine Liturgy were officiated by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope, representative of His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch, in the presence of His Excellency Metropolitan Paisios of Tyana, Abbot of the Monastery, and Their Graces Bishop Philotheos of Meloa and Vikentios of Apameia, Deputy Abbot of the Holy Monastery. After the Liturgy followed the Great Procession of the Miraculous Icon to follow.

Historical visit of HAH the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Lyon - 18-19 July 2009 - meeting with Cardinal Philippe Barbarin, Archbishop of Lyon, and celebration of Vespers with him in the Catholic Cathedral of Lyon. The next day the Ecumenical Patriarch presided over 'in chorostasia' the Divine Liturgy in the Orthodox Church of Lyon, a parish that celebrates this year the 60th anniversary of it's foundation. The Patriarch delivered also a historical speech tot the Assembly of KEK on the 50th anniversary of this ecumenical body. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomeos I, a spiritual leader who represents Eastern Orthodox Christianity, has called for the creation of a churches’ umbrella body in Europe to include Roman Catholics alongside Anglicans, Orthodox and Protestants. The Orthodox leader asked Cardinal Philippe Barbarin of Lyon, who was present in the audience, to transmit the proposal to “where it needs to go”, in an apparent reference to the Vatican. XIIIth Assembly of KEK in Lyon (15-21 July, 2009)

From 15-21 July 2009 in Lyon, France, CEC brought together, for the thirteenth time in its history, representatives of the Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican and Old Catholic Churches in Europe in an Assembly under the theme “Called to One Hope in Christ”. The 13th CEC Assembly was held in the Cité Internationale of Lyon, a modern Congress Centre designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano. In Lyon, focusing on the theme of hope, a framework was set for the work of CEC for 2009-2015, offer hope and vision for ecumenism in Europe, contribute to a just, sustainable and participatory. Among the orthodox participants we mention: HAH the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel of Romania and His Beatitude Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana and all Albania.

The delegation met with His Holiness Pope Benedict, was invited to have lunch with him in his private apartement, had a meeting with Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Unity of Christians, and his staff and assisted at the Vespers and Eucharisty for the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul.

IVth Panorthodox Preconciliar Conference - Chambésy, June 2009 - At the invitation of His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, following the consensus of their Beatitudes the Primates of the most holy local Orthodox Churches, as expressed during their meeting held in the Phanar in 2008, the IVth Panorthodox Preconciliar Conference met at the Orthodox Centre of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Chambésy, Geneva, from 6th to 12th June 2009. The work of the Conference began with the concelebration of the Divine Liturgy, on the day of Pentecost, presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan John of Pergamon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Vespers presided over by His Grace Bishop Ciprian of Campineanul (assistant of the Patriarch of Romania) in the presence of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel of Romania, some 10 hierarchs, lot's of priests and deacons and hundreds of faithful. The Vespers were celebrated in the Church of Saints Constantine & Helen in Sinasos and the Liturgy in the Church of Saint Theodore in Malakopi.

Visit to Sinope (Pontus) in Turkey - May 27-29, 2009 - led by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope, assistant to the Metropolitan of Belgium (Ecumenical Patriarchate) with a group of about 40 pilgrims from Belgium and Luxemburg. On wednesday May 27th, 2009, the group of the Archdiocese of Belgium and Exarchate of the Netherlands and Luxemburg celebrated Vespers in the Balatlar Church in Sinope, a church from the 7th century dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. No religious service was celebrated in this church since many many years. The group visited also the Erfelek Waterfals.

Gathering of the Orthodox Youth of Belgium (Bruges, March 20-21, 2009) - under the theme "Theology & Ecology". On Friday March 20th 2009 the participants attended the third part of the Holy Service of the Akathist of the Mother of God in the orthodox church of Saints Constantine & Helen in Bruges (Belgium), presided over by His GRace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope. The next day they payed a visit at the Natural Park "Het Zwin", near Knokke-Heist. In the afternoon of that very day there was a conference by Priest Dominique Verbeke (Ghent) about " Ecology and Theology: an impossible dialogue?" and a moment for questions and answers about "The life of Christ today", with Bishop Athenagoras, Priest Dominique Verbeke and Deacon Ciprian Popescu, the responsible of the Orthodox Youth in Belgium and organizer of the meeting.

Visit of His Beatitude Archbishop Chrysostomos of Cyprus at Bruges (March 19th, 2009) - and welcomed by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope, assistant of Metropolitan Panteleimon of Belgium (Ecumenical Patriarchate) and Oikonomos Bernard Peckstadt, dean of the Orthodox Parish of Saints Constantine & Helen in Bruges. AMong the people present we mention also Archpriest Ignace Peckstadt, dean of the Orthtodox Parish of Saint Andrew the Apostle in Ghent. The Archbishop of Cyprus was accompagnied by His Eminence Metropolitan Georgios of Paphos, Their Graces Bishops Leondios of Hitra and Porphyrios of Neapolis (Director of the Office of the Church of Cyprus tot the EU), Archimandrite Benedictos Ioannou and Deacon Marinos. The visited also the Townhall of Bruges and the Chapel of the Holy Blood, where they venerated the Holy Relic of Saint Basil the Great!

Sunday of Orthodoxy in Brussels (March 8th, 2009) presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon of Belgium (Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate) in concelebration with Their Excellencies Archbishop Simon (Moscow Patriarchate) and Metropolitan Athanasios of Achaïa (Church of Greece), Their Graces Bishops Athenagoras of Sinope (Ecumenical Patriarchate) and Porphyrios of Neapolis (Church of Cyprus), priests and deacons from all jurisdictions present in Belgium. The Liturgy was sung by 3 choirs: the Byzantine of the Cathedral, the Interparish Choir and a Romanian Choir. The homily was pronounced by Prof. Panagiotis Yannopoulos, Archont of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Consecration of the new Orthodox Church of Saint Amandus in Courtrai (Belgium) - 07.02.2009 - presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon of Belgium, Exarch of the Netherlands and Luxemburg (Ecumenical Patriarchate), assisted by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope, Archpriest Stavros Triantafyllou, chancellor of the Archdiocese, and priests and deacons. Present was the Governor of Western-Flanders, Mr. Paul Breyne and representatvies of the sister Churches. At the end of the Liturgy Metropolitan Panteleimon eleveated the dean of the Parish, Fr. Pius Pauwelyn to the rank of 'oikonomos'.

The celebration was presided over by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Sinope in concelebration with Archpriest Iakov Markovic (dean of the parish), Priest Theolphile Pelgrims (Brussels) and Deacon Dusan Markovic (Brussels). The parish belongs to the Serbian Orthodox Patriarchate. Bishop Athenagoras give a sermon about the importance of prayer and spiritual life and said at the end of the celebration to keep unity, love, joy, harmony!

Studiedag voor oud-katholieken, anglikanen en orthodoxen in Nederland (24 januari 2009). Deze had plaats te Rotterdam en had als thema " Wij vieren liturgie in het hart van de kerk voor het leven van de wereld". Deze studiedag werdingericht onder impuls van Aartsbisschop Joris Vercammen (oud-katholiek), Bisschop Athenagoras van Sinope (orthodox) en Canon John De Wit (anglicaan). De dag werd afgesloten met orthodox Vespers in de orthodoxe kerk van de Heilige Nikolaas te Rotterdam.

The new Bishop of Pärnu and Saarema was elected on the proposol of a general assembly of the Church of Estonia by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
