The 15th annual BU Open 2009 was held on Saturday, Nov 7. It was a beautiful New England autumn day, which the glass windows of the BU backcourt venue allowed the players to enjoy – a distinctive characteristic that enhances enjoyment of this tournament. 91 players participated – I think a record turnout for a BU Open, (or, as I said to Mark Kaprielian, a normal Tuesday at the MetroWest club.) After having pre-registered, several BU Open fans had to cancel because of illness – Barry Lai, Chris Chase, Harold Dondis, Marc Esserman, and Bill Kelleher. One of the enjoyable features of the tournament is the number of people who return year after year – e.g., Mike Griffin has been coming for the last 12 years – and it was at the BU Open that he broke a twenty-year hiatus from chess while he raised his family. Capstone Awards 2009 About Capstone The concept of a Capstone project is older than, and certainly not unique to, the College of General Studies at Boston University. A final research project has historically been considered the culmination of a liberal arts education. In addition to the historical and academic meanings of the term, there is an architectural sense to the word “capstone.” A capstone is the final block that is placed on top of a construction project to tie the whole structure together. First, just as the construction of a building is not an individual effort, but rather a process requiring the labors of an organized group, so too is the Capstone project a group effort. Students are expected to work together for the success of the group. The more each individual gives to the group, the more each person will gain from the month’s work. In what is probably a record turnout for a $10 Open, 47 players competed on Oct. 10th, among them, 28 in a very strong open section. GM Alexander Ivanov and IM David Vigorito shared first place with scores of 3.5 of 4. NM Charles Riordan, Christopher Chase, Lawyer Times, had 3.0, along with young Zongyaun "Ben" Yuan - now rated 2127 after 32 rated games in the United States. Other masters in the open section were: FM Teddy Coleman, WFM Roza Eynullayeva, NM Carey Theil, and NM Chris Williams. Dustin Richwine won sole 1st in the under 1800 section with 4.0. Eric Lawless, Greg Siciliano, and Timothy Pan shared second with 3.0. Complete crosstable are available at the USCF site.

16th annual charles drafts memorial tournament, 2009

The 16th Annual Charles Drafts memorial tournament drew 32 players. NM Lawyer Times won the open section with 4.0 of 4. Gabe Frieden and Dan Leach shared second place honors with scores of 3.0. Gabe is playing well, having just shared 1st place in the U1900 section of the 39th Continental Open in Sturbridge last weekend. The under 1900 section was won by young Zongyuan Yuan with 4.0. He had come to the US from China two months ago, attended the Boylston chess camp with Jacob Rasin last week, and played and won his first four tournament games for a provisional rating of 2142. The prize fund was guaranteed by Walter Driscoll and the event was directed by Bernardo Iglesias.

IM David Vigorito discussed what he said was one of the most important and under-appreciated factors in tournament chess - decisioning making. He illustrated his points with some fascinating positions from his recent games. In a game from Foxwoods with GM Shabalov, he showed a position from which there were 5 winning lines and a 6th which led to an interesting draw. Dave played the drawing line.

Many Bostonians traveled to the 39th AMATE. Several teams were loaded with Boylston players and in most rounds at least three BCF saturated teams were behind the velvet ropes. In the sixth and final round, boards one, two, and four had BCF contenders. The team Paul MacIntyre, LM Brian Hulse, Libardo Rueda, and Alan Price won with a perfect 6.0 -- many congratulations for a truly impressive achievement.

RI Pawneater 2009, feb - the 100th

This was the 100th Pawneater in the series started by Gus Gosselin in Rhode Island. With 65 players, it was also the largest. Frank Delbonis and Eric Berkey were the able TDs. In the Open Section, Dave Vigorito was 1st with 3.5. John Curdo, Miro Reverby, James Martin, and William Smirnov tied for 2nd with 3.0 In the U1900 Section Thomas Hartmayer won with 4.0 and Paul Sciarafa came in 2nd with 3.5. The U1500 Section was won by Boris Zhevelycik with 4.0 and Charvdatta Deodas was 2nd with 3.5.

Charles Drafts Open 2008

Charles Riordan won the 15th annual Charles Drafts Open, sponsored by his friend Walter Driscoll. Lawyer Times, Ben Goldberg, and Genesis Lung tied for 2nd/3rd. In the U1900 section, Walter won and Darwin Ding finished 2nd. Benedict Smail, Ryan Ottaviano, and Harold Dondis all tied for 3rd.

FM Charles Hertan talk on Forcing Moves in Chess

FM Charles Hertan discussed his new New In Chess book with about two dozen fascinated chess players. He described the rationale for his 15 year labor. His enthusiasm for the beauty of combinations was apparent. Hertan argued that the analysis of forcing moves is key to solving problematic and critical situations and that humans have a heuristic bias which may lead them to overlook key combinations. He recommended looking at moves that seem at first glance losing material or time or initiative - which he analogized to "computer eyes" - the brute force calculation of even absurd moves. BCC Quads 8-7 July 2008 Bernardo Iglesias directed a field of 27 players in this month's quads at the club, a format that seems to be increasingly popular. FM Chris Chase (3.0) defeated Carey Theil (1.0), Jason Rihel (1.0) and Andrew Wang (1.0). Benedict Smail (2.0) here for the summer from the University of Wisconsin beat Vikas Shiva (1.5), Howard Goldowsky (1.5), and Mika Brattain (1.0). Michelle Chen (2.5) topped her quad, over Adam Yedidia (2.0), Embert Lin (1.0), and Harold Dondis (0.5). David Sculley (2), Danny Moraff (2), and Tony Cortizas (2) pushed Alexander Lee (0.0) to the side and shared the $50 prize. Seth Lieberman (2.0) and Nicholas Plotkin (2.0) took their share, over Robert Oresick (1.5) and Matthew Lee (0.5) The remaining quad was really a Swiss, dominated by Tony DiNosse (3.0) who ran the table. Men and women, young and old, novices, patzers and International Grandmasters, US champions, every ethnicity, every fashion, hirsute and bald, strong athletes and visually or physically challenged.... What other sport has such a spectrum of humanity in a single tournament. Two Boston University teams and many Boston and Boylston players competed.

Herbert E. Healy was born in 1885 and died on Wednesday, January 9, 1974 in Boston. He was 88 years old and one of the original Charter members of the Boylston Chess Club at its official organization in 1919. He was Secretary Emeritus at his death. His death occurred only days after the Herbert Healy Appreciation Tournament (New Year's 30/30 smash 15) and Testimony was held in his honor. New Years day in 1974 was a Wednesday. Boston had a 10 - 12 inches snowfall, but Mr. Healy showed up at the Young Men’s Christian Union (where the club was located) and peeked into the Chess club. He went home to his South End apartment on Brookline St. and died in his sleep. In 1980 the New Year's 30/30 was permanent dedicated to him as Herbert E. Healy Open house. Herbert E. Healy along with Harry Lyman, Irvin Yaffee, Myer Edelstein and others customarily provided food to the participants of this event.

BU Open 2007 The 13th annual BU Open was held on Saturday, November 10 on a lovely day in the student union of Boston University. More than eighty players competed in what all agreed was a very pleasant venue – natural light from many windows, well-spaced tables and comfortable chairs, and a Starbucks a minute away in the food court (where one could grab pizza and burgers, sushi and salads, Chinese and turkey dinners between rounds.) TD Bernardo Iglesias of the Boylston Chess Foundation (under whose affiliation the tournament was rated) did his usual professional job. Of course, the tournament was sponsored by the Boston University Chess Club (Roza Eynullayeva and Barry Lai, co-presidents, Steven Abrahams, vice-president, Melvin Zhang, treasurer, and Richard Soohoo, secretary, and Robert Oresick, advisor. This year a new prize, the Allan Ong prize for top undergraduate student, was added to honor Allan, who was the first president of the BU Chess Club and started the BU Open.

Boylston Chess Club Champions

The Boylston Chess Club has a long tradition of strong club champions, who in some cases have been state or national champions as well. The first official champion in 1919, the official founding of the club, was H.G. Daniel. In 1921, G.H. Friberg won. I have references to early champions during the club's informal days at the Y. 1890 - John Barry, 1891 - Harry Nelson Pillsbury, 1892 - C.F. Burille (one of the "Adjeep" players), 1893, Franklin K. Young, and 1894 - George H. Walcott. After 1921, we have a long gap, with good records back only to 1971. Bill Kelleher dominated the 1980s. Jacob Rasin along with Chris Chase and Alex Cherniack ruled the 1990s. Paul MacIntyre is working on a hegemony in the 2000s. bcc lecture Roman Dzindzichashvili July 2007 Roman as raconteur

Roman Dzindzichashvili entertained about 30 Boylston club members and guests last Wednesday evening. The audience asked about his opinions and experiences, so Roman launched into a fascinating knights tour of topics: collusion and corruption in the highest levels of chess, experiences with Bobby Fischer, the strength of young players (with the observation that "young" is younger that it used to be,) his most memorable game in which he discovered step-by-step an astonishing combination, the GMs he hates, computer chess (no human can win nowdays, though he answered a computer challenge in the 70s by stipulating that he had to win 7 1/2 of 10 to draw and 8 to win. Roman won 9 of 10 with his strategic trick - which he explained in 2 minutes.) Dzindzi was completely charming with a droll sense of humor and we all laughed most of the evening. Two hours flew by. Thanks to the GM and thanks to Paul MacIntyre to arranging an amusing evening of chess.

The new year was ushered in with the annual Herb Healy Open House at the Boylston. Bernardo Iglesias and Mike Griffin (head chef) organized the party and tournament, for which Bernardo and Walter Driscoll were TDs. It was a great turn-out, in numbers (67), in chess friends new and old, and in player strength.with 13 masters playing and FM Jacob Rasin and IM Satea al Husari visiting and observing. The masters included FM Chris Chase, IM David Vigorito, FM Paul MacIntyre, FM Denys Shmelov, NM Lawyer Times, LM Eric Godin, NM Charles Riordan, GM Larry Christiansen, FM William Kelleher, NM Alex Cherniack, NM Max Enkin, NM Chris Williams, and FM Joe Fang. The 12th annual BU Open 2006 was quite a tournament. It was the largest (102) and strongest (13 masters) in our history. On a very pretty Spring-like day, in a very pleasant setting, BU's George Sherman Union Backcourt, three champions emerged: GM Alexander Ivanov, FM Bill Kelleher (a BU alum), and Max Malyuta each had scores of 3.5 of 4.

BU Open Champions

The Boston University Open is the BU Chess Club's premier event. The idea of having an inexpensive convenient rated event was suggested by the club President Allan Ong to promote playing serious tournament chess among college players, though all chess players are welcomed. Since the first BU Open in 1995, players ranging from beginners in their first rated tournament ( e.g. the club advisor Robert Oresick) to strong players from around the East Coast (and in the Frenklakh years, from California) have tried their hand at winning the top prize (including former US Chess Champions GM Joel Benjamin, GM Alexander Ivanov and former US Women's Champion WIM Esther Epstein (who works at Boston University).)

Benjamin Landey

BENJAMIN LANDEY by Bernardo Iglesias Benjamin Landey was born in 1912 and died on January 20, 1981 in Quincy. From his high school days he worked for the Sharon Bolt and Screw Company founded by Emil Reubens, reaching the position of board chairman, which he held at his death. According to Harry Lyman, Benjamin married Reubens’ daughter. For many years, he was the ceremonial chess leader of New England: Landey was President of the MSCA, the Boylston Chess Club, the Boston Metropolitan Chess League, the New England Chess Association, and the USCF Regional Vice-President. He was a truly regional chess entrepreneur, a notable chess organizer, a man of remarkable poise and intelligence, a master of parliamentary procedure and a skillful politician, that is, a leader among leaders in the region.
