Friday - Sunday, April 22-24, 2011 Haleakala Service Project (S) We will be spending the weekend at Kapalaoa Cabin in the center of Haleakala Crater. This trip is for hikers in good physical condition and for those who don't mind "Roughing It". We will have a 7 mile hike in via the Sliding Sands Trail and exit via the Halemau'u Trail. The Kapalaoa cabin was built in the 1930's by CCC Workers and is very rustic with an outhouse and NO shower facilities. The work will include eradicating California Telegraph plant and Plantago. Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve Service Project

Friday - Sunday, March 25-27 Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve Service Project (S) We'll be working with NARS clearing a new 5 acre fenced enclosure of Kahili ginger and Faya Tree. We'll access the enclosure via Volcanoes National Park where it is an easy half mile hike from Thurston Lava tube to the work site. This will be our second time at this site. It's a great way to see how a new site begins and evolves into a truly native Hawaiian Reserve. We'll see native birds in the ohia forest. Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge

HAKALAU NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, HAWAII -- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is creating makai-mauka corridors of native vegetation across open pasture lands for native forest birds to use in their migrations up and down the slopes of Mauna Kea. The service projects often involve planting native species such as Koa or working in the greenhouse. Accommodations are at a well-equipped cabin the 6 200 - foot elevation with electricity, running water, a flush toilet, hot shower, kitchen and bunk beds with mattresses.
