Charges Pending Against Driver in Fatal Crash on Highway 89 June 29th, 2007 @ 12:46pm Tom Callan, KSL Newsradio Charges are pending against the 25- year-old driver that smashed head-on into another car on Highway 89 in Layton, killing a mother and her son. The pickup was going north but somehow swerved and smashed into a southbound car filled with an Ogden Valley mom and her four kids. "Genine Howard, 40 years old, died and Genine's son, Matthew Howard, was also deceased, and he was 11 years old," says Sergeant John Holden. "No indication as to alcohol, yet." He says 13-year-old Rachel is now in stable condition, but 8-year-old Esther and 7-year-old Caleb are still in critical condition. Holden says this is one of the worst accidents he has ever seen.
(KUTV) SALT LAKE CITY A second child has died after a violent head-on crash on Highway 89 in Layton, according to the family’s Web site. Eight-year-old Esther Howard died of injuries she sustained when the car she was riding in collided head-on with an oncoming truck. Her mother and a brother also died in the crash. Janine Howard, 40, of Huntsville was traveling with her four children Thursday afternoon when a man driving a pickup truck veered into the woman's lane striking her Chevrolet Cavalier head-on. Howard and her 11-year-old son, Matthew, were pronounced dead at the scene. Three other children in the car were taken to Primary Children's Hospital. Rachael Howard, 13, is in stable condition and 7-year-old Caleb Howard is in critical condition. Esther died Friday afternoon according to a posting by her grandfather on an Internet blog. The 25-year-old driver of the truck was also taken to the hospital with a broken ankle and a broken back.
