Christmas Pudding

Today I learned how to make Christmas pudding, a laborious dessert any pyro would love. Before you serve it you heat it up. soak it with brandy and light it on fire. I am taking one back to America with me and will set it on fire myself. We had a little get together tonight with some of the Rogers friends. Lynne and I cooked all day. We had loads of food- cheese, crisps, Welsh cakes, veggies, chocolate things, bruschetta, nuts, olives, cheesy biscuits, wine and juice for Barbara and me (the non-drinkers). We had a smashing time chatting and visiting. We were all quite knackered by the time everyone left at 11;30 but it was well worth it. The food looked lovely in all the handmade pots. It doesn't get much better than that!

Fixing the Roof

When all the rain began water started dripping into Lynne's office. She crawled up into the attic last week to put a drip-catching bucket in place until Andy could come over. Andy is Rhayader's favorite "builder" or handy man. He did most of the work in the new kitchen and has helped with numerous projects in the past like building the new showroom. He had to replace a tile on the roof.

A Stormy Walk

After a week of dreary weather I wanted to get out and enjoy the sunshine. Finally, blue skies had appeared! I saw some lovely rainbows and displays in the sky but the blue sky dissolved into grayness. Although it shortened my walk and got me a bit soggy, it was a beautiful example of the volatile and dramatic weather of Wales.

Churches in Rhayader

Because there are so few non-Anglican protestants in Rhayader, they meet at one of three different buildings each week. A pastor comes from another village to do the message. Each week there is a different pastor. There are usually only about 15 people including myself and they are almost all "pensioners". They are all very friendly and are so happy to see a young person in the congregation.

Rainy days

It has been very wet and windy all this week. The field has little rivers running through it and the ground is soggy. Libby and Tess don't care; they just want to chase a toy. I tried a new thing this week, faceting. It involves throwing the piece thicker than normal and then slicing away strips of the clay.

Loading the bisque kiln

Finally there are some empty spaces in the workshop as we loaded a bunch of work into the bisque kiln. It was a wet day and we had to stop carrying pots frequently from one building to another because of the driving rain. Phil also took some photos of Hamada pieces he will be selling in May. He is compiling a catalogue

Back in Action

This week Phil was determined to get some work done in the studio. He made about 10 large bottles before the accident. The night it happened, as Lynne and I were about to leave the hospital, he beckoned her over and said, "Make sure Kari cuts those bottles off the bats and wraps them well". Lynne has told me he has a single track mind- pots, pots, pots. Even laying in hospital very battered he was thinking of saving his work. I kept them damp and he is finally getting to finish them, nearly six weeks later.

Christmas Sale

This Saturday and Sunday the Rogers have a sale to clear out the old work to make room for the new. Unfortunately the weather was the worst I've seen since my stay in Wales. There was hurricane strength gales and sideways rain. We did still have some customers but it was not as busy as past years. It was still fun and festive with lots of food. I got to meet some good friends of the Rogers and get more experience with sales. In particular Phil had me pitching his pots to some of the neighbors who knew nothing about pottery. It is always good experience to discuss pottery and its processes to people as I often take this information for granted myself. Despite the unfavorable weather, It was a great experience.

A Welsh Thanksgiving

The Rogers obliged my desire to have Thanksgiving in Wales. We had it the day before the true Thanksgiving because Lynne had to work on the real day. I spent the day getting all the food ready. It was a bit of a challenge because the oven is the new kitchen is still not hooked up. We made everything on a gas camping stove, a convection microwave and in Phil's little test gas kiln. He came up with the idea the night before and I thought it was perfect. Thanksgiving at Phil Rogers' house with the food baked in a kiln is just right. Jason and Julianne came over to celebrate and we had a fantastic time.

First snow in Wales

The snow began Sunday and was still around Monday morning. It was pretty slushy and wet. By 12pm it was melted but when I looked off into the mountains it was still there. Libby and Tess seemed extra excited to go out for their walk

Jasons' firing, Teapots and Jugs

Some of these photos were taken in Jason and Julianne's 16th century house. All the bedrooms upstairs had carved wood paneling on the walls and a fireplace in each room. I spent the night there to help fire the oil/wood/gas salt kiln the following day. Phil came by in the afternoon and helped troubleshoot and get the temperature climbing. I found the butterfly really early in the morning while frost was still coating everything. I think he was drawn to the warmth of the kiln. There are some pictures of a frosty morning at Lower Cefn Faes (Lynne and Phil's). Also there are pictures of my finished teapots and a few jugs. It was about the third batch of teapots I've made and I am happy with them. After they're finished will be the true test...do they pour well?

I spent five days with Lisa Hammond in London. She has a workshop in a converted train ticket office. I was able to help fire her soda kiln, watch her make some pots and make some of my own.

While staying with Claire and Simon I went for a walk with Simon, Mattie, and Charlie. We stopped to eat lunch and stopped again to make a fire and brew some tea. It was a lovely day!

Oxford Ceramic Fair

I spent a weekend at the Craft Potter's Association annual fair. I hitched a ride with Jennifer Hall, a potter who lives near Lynne and Phil. I stayed with John and Jude Jelfs who live in Bourton-on-the-water. It was a great weekend although very sad as Phil was still in hospital. Phil, Lynne and I were all supposed to be there.

Elan Valley

I visited the Elan Valley twice. The first time Phil and Lynne took me to one of the dams. He had a little hike to the top of it. A few weeks later I went on a 10 mile hike led by a ranger. There were some beautiful views as we hiked to the top of some hills. The Autumn colors were beginning.

Libby and Tess

My two good friends, collie sisters Libby and Tess. They are a bit spoiled as they snuggle up on the couch with me and get fed biscuits more than they should. They follow us around everywhere and are constant companions.
