Lisbon.
A beautiful arch along one of the main streets of Lisboa, St. Augastina.
The city's commercial center. When it was rebuilt after a major earthquake in the mid-18th century, Lisbon was organize to have each of its industries--shoe-making, pottery-making, etc. etc.--be on a designated street. All of these streets led to this square, where the goods could be shipped off down the river and to the ocean. Slick, huh?
Ominous clouds in the center center.
Imperialistic propaganda.
The Lisbon Cathedral, an impressive Gothic structure.
This way to the castle! and up and up the hills we went--gee whiz, can medieval cities have winding streets!
disgusting.
View of Lisbon from the Castello de St. Jorge.
(please note the Golden Gate Bridge in the background--I wasn't lying!)
In the castle's courtyard.
Springtime!
Mieke finds another cat. Actually, there were apparently 30 in the castle complex. We found a crazy cat man, who told us he took up getting cats about thirty years ago, instead of getting re-married. A wise choice, that.
The Castello de St. Jorge.

The crazy cat man, showing off one of his prized possessions.
Lisbon's lovely city streets
One of many trams. This one is a titch more commercial than the rest, which are used as public transportation throughout the city.
The inside of a metro station. How apocalyptic is that, right?
Mieke as a tourist. Yesssss....
Speaking of tourists, here are some in front of the tower of Belen. I LOVED their t-shirts over long-sleeve shirts, and that they were still wearing their bike helmets. Never can be too cautious, I guess.
The Golden Gate Bridge, as taken from a train window (sorry for the smudges).
Seeing double.
The Tower of Belen
We stopped for a pre-dinner snack, which included the AMAZING Belen pastries...
...and a cup of coffee or two.

A serious hottie.

Portugalia shots (a.k.a. Red Lobster)
Inside of the restaurant--they have a thing for beer mugs, apparently.
The view out of the window from our hostel.
Directly across from the bed.
Orange tree outside of the breakfast room (please ignore the scaffolding. Yes, I know, I know, it wrecks the ambiance.).

I found this fascinatingly flamboyant.
Beautiful columns within the church. These somehow reminded me of the four suits of playing cards.
Good-bye, trams! Good-bye, Lisbon!
