2009 NEN Award Photo Album

The 2009 NEN Awards were a huge event. Sold out a week in advance, over 450 neighborhood leaders from all over the Ciy cam together and applauded each other's work. They were joined by Mayor Newsom, BOS President David Chiu, Sup. John Avalos, Sup. Ross Mirkarimi, & Sup. Sophie Maxwell. The honorees were clealy touched by the outpouring of support. D11 townhall 3.07.09

On Saturday March 7th Sup John Avalos hosted a town hall at the Excelsior Childrens Center. The forum was a chance for community members to engage directly with city officials about issues they are concerned with. Public safety dominated the dialogue, which was honest and at the same time civil.

On November 13th, 2008 hundreds of San Franciscans came together in the North Light Court of City Hall and spent an entire evening celebrating what’s right with our City at the 2008 NEN Awards featuring the 2009 Community Challenge Grants.

Community Day at the Victory Garden

On Saturday, August 16th, people came from all over San Francisco (and the world) to see the Victory Garden in person and learn about how to live sustainably in our great City.

Potrero Hill Community Clean Up

On Saturday August 2nd a coalition of City agencies and the residents of Potrero Hill came together to spend an entire day cleaning up the neighborhood. Thousands of pounds of materials were remoned from the site and in the end, the community shined like it hasn't in years.

Locals turning used items into art - it was a beautiful thing. The opening night of the show at African American Arts Center was a big hit with everyone who swung by for food and community.

Movie Night at Quesada Gardens

Quesada Gardens is always taking community building to the next level. On this night the neighborhood came together and enjoyed fresh produce from their neighbor's back yards and a hot new indie film about kids that rock on a huge outdoor screen. The weather was great and the popcorn was devoured.

Grove Street Farmer's Market Opening Day

On July 13th the Grove Street Farmers Market opened to hundreds of locals shopping at dozens of booths. Organic produce and beautiful flowers were in abundance as the fair literally stopped traffic and let the neighborhood reclaim the street for the day. All of this was possible because the neighborhoods (North of Panhandle and Alamo Square) came together and identified the market as a priority. With the help from Office of Economic Development and Supervisor Mirkarimi, it became a reality. Swing by every Sunday from 10 to 2pm. Community building - one heirloom tomato at a time.

Victory Garden 08 GH

On Saturday July 12th, hundreds of San Franciscans descended upon the Civic Center to help install the Victory Garden. As part of the Slow Food Nation celebration on Labor day weekend, the garden is meant to re-energize the already large community farming community here in the City.

Amazon Mural Project Dedication

The Playground at Crocker Amazon has been a work of love of the community for years. Faced with the challenge of replacing their old run down facility, they didn't whine - they led! Years later they had a great new convening space that was sadly vitimized by graffitti. Not to worry, once again the community came together and applied for a Community Challenge Grant. Upon securing the money they needed, they partnered with the internationally renown muralist organization Precita Eyes and over a 8 month period covered hundreds of square feet of cement with tiles. The results speak for themselves.

The NEN 2008 Clean & Green Summit

On May 31st Community Leaders from all over San Francisco convened at Cesar Chavez Elementary School in the Mission and attended break out groups and took tour of the surrounding neighborhood to learn how they can make their neighborhoods a better place to live.

Mission Mural Box Project

Every neighbothood in the City must deal with graffitti in a different way. In the mission they took a play out of San Diego's play book and decided to put murals on city owned signal boxes that were constantly being tagged. A coalition was created comprised of the legendary Precita Eyes Muralists, The Lower 24th St Neighborhood and Merchant Association, local youth non-profits, DPW, DPT, Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services and Sterling Bank. Each member played a key role in making this project happen. Check them out on your own - start at Mission and 24th and walk east towards Potrero.

2008 March Gladness in the Mission

This year's annual March Gladness tournament was held at Garfield park in the Mission. Despite the threat of rain, hundreds of community members and dozens of non-profits showed up and the rain - took a "rain check"! It was an amazing event organized by a coalition of agencies including MONS, Rec and Park, McCormack Baron, and Safety Network.

On Saturday March 8th, an army of empowered folks met at the African American Cultural Arts Center in the middle of the Western Addition and spent their day off planting trees, removing graffiti and building community.

Balboa Park Playground Community Rebuild

On March 4th over 500 people went to work replacing the old run down play structure at Balboa Playground with a brand new one. With the help of the Neighborhood Park Council, Rec and Park, KaBOOM!, and a few hundred generous orthopedists who were in town for a convention the job got done in one day and the kids love it.

Cooking Clases at Westside Housing Authority

The kids of the Westside Court Housing Authority Development decided that they wanted to learn how to cook and Caitlin Henry from Safety Network, the Tenants Association and the Californis Culinary Academy made it happen. Goldfish Meat Loaf - Yum!

Recycled Juck Mail Clothing Exhibit at City Hall

When the students at the Art Academy here in San Francisco were challenged with doing something creative with Junk Mail - they responded in an fantastic way. A 40 foot long sculpture on the 4th floor, mannequins featuring couture made from advertisements, and a mail box demon now grace City Hall - check it out!

Community Led tour of B. Pitts Housing Development

In January of 2008 the Tenants Association led a tour of the B. Pitts Housing development in the Western Addition. The tour was joined by City Administrator Ed Lee, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, the Western Addition CRN, Safety Network and the Village Project. This the kind of cross agency coordination that neighborhood leaders need to have to take on large challenges.

The 2007 NEN Summit

The 2007 NEN Summit was the first official event for our organization. Featuring a resource fair with over 60 agencies and non profits, 7 breakout sessions and a keynote address by Latoya Cantrell from New Orleans - it was smashing success with over 500 San Franciscans attending.
