Gretzky & Shania at WHCI

Gretzky attended WHCI for a year to play AAA Hockey in Toronto. A true role model by all accounts from teachers and fellow students. Shania was then known as Eilleen Twain, and played trumpet in the WHCI Band : ) Here she is playing guitar at the 1981 Christmas Assembly at WHCI. West Humber CI goes to Cleveland Ohio for five days on a fantastic Music Trip, May 12-16, 2010! Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Boat Cruise with Dinner and Dance, tons of shopping at Erie Mall, Great music concert and exchange with Ravenna High School (as in 2002!) Cedar Point Amusement Park, stayed at the Hilton Hotel, and much much MORE! WHCI Music does it all!

WHCI Music Night Apr 2010

WHCI Music Night 2010 was a huge smash, with all ensembles pulling out all the stops! Choreography, costumes, and many "new" older songs. The theme was "Back to the Roots" and it was fantastic! Earl LaPierre Jr. was our special guest this year and WHCI as usual loved him! Unfortunately the camera battery died just as the Drumline "STOMP" scene was starting! Way to go WHCI!

West Humber Collegiate Institute's Drumline, Grade 12 Steel Band, Gr 10,11,12 Motown Bands, and star vocalist Toneisha performed at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic School in Mississauga in Feb 2010! It was a smash success, with tons of dancing and laughter! All groups rocked and the students of St. Bernard were LIVE!!!! Way to go!

WHCI Remembrance Day 2009

WHCI Grade 11 Steel Band plays O Canada and Imagine with Shantel and Crystal singing beautifully (under the direction of Ms. Mashinter), Drama production is amazing, Major Phillips speaks powerfully, Omed is on snare drum for play, Mr. Cullen plays "Last Post" . WHCI 08-09 Homecoming FB Game & Championship 2008

WHCI Drumline plays for Homecoming Game Oct 2008! Karlos Thomson held the drum for Joshawn since the harness would not fit with his shoulder pads! Many new drumline members in the line had their debut at this game! Well done! Natasha, Shane and Tremaine also came back to play for the game on drums! WHCI won the game, of course! This group also includes our Principal Mr. Siddiq playing drums with the drumline!(no rehearsal, first time!) Yeeeaahhhhh!! Also: Campionship Game at Birchmount stadium Nov 13 08. Close game, 17-20 for Forest Hill. Awesome work, WHCI Football! Chris Reesor from Yamaha also came to the game!!

Nunavut 2008

I was fortunate to be asked to teach the Music Camp in Iqaluit, Nunavut this year! Class included Drum Set, Steel Pan, and Drumline using Drum Practise Pads, and a performance for the community. I also taught an adult class and performed for a community coffee house. Parents authorized the pics to be posted for easier sharing by families. Thanks Iqaluit Music Society!

WHCI Music travels to B-town to play for Our Lady of Peace ES..with new hits fresh from Music Night the week before, like Mario Brothers and R&B Medley 2008 (including Apologize, Low, Soldier Boy and Calabria!) The audience was fantastic and sang along to most songs! Limbo contest at end during "Hot!Hot!Hot!" almost got out of hand! Great energy by WHCI and the audience!!

WHCI 07-08 Spring Music Night April 08

WHCI Music once again puts on an amazing Music Night! All EIGHT steel bands played a great selection of old and new classic hits. The Motown Band was powerful as ever, playing New York, New York and a Motown Medley...The 60-Piece Concert Band played three selections including "Spider-Man" with a Drum Solo by Adrian,and the Drumline and Percussion Ensemble joined forces with the Grades 11 & 12 Steel Bands for a wicked R&B Medley including "Apologize, Low, Soldier Boy and Calabria"! (featuring Leeanne on Saxophone and Omed on Tabla!) Also on the bill were: Daisy singing "Imagine", Natasha soloing on pan for "Red Red Wine", Heber, Michael and Mario as "El Mariachis" (guitar and castanets) and the African Drumming and Dance Ensemble! Earl LaPierre was our special guest once again with a great medley of everyone's favourite tunes! Joshawn lost his voice, so "Knock on Wood" will have to wait until NYC in May! www.whcimusic.com!

Members of WHCI's huge pan program returned to Bolton United Church for the 5th straight year to play for a Black History Service. Speakers about Black History and steel pans were Dipa, Neela, Jasmeen, Adrian and Leeann, who all did a fantastic job! Sara (from Bolton) joined WHCI's Daisy for a great version of "Imagine"! After a standing ovation by the congregation, Adrian wowed them all with a great drum solo in "Hot! Hot! Hot!" Great job, everyone!

New York City Music Trip May 2006

The biggest trip ever-so far! 51 Students and four teachers to NYC for 5 days! Empire State Building, STOMP! on Broadway, Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, USS Intrepid Aircraft Carrier, Concert in Manhattan, Shopping, Carnegie Hall, Apollo Theatre, Central Park, Tour of Manhattan, Ground Zero, Statue of Liberty Boat Cruise, John Lennon's Dakota, Music Stores, and MORE! It was such a great trip, we are going back in 2008!

This is the year we won 5 First Place finishes and one 2nd at the Kiwanis Festival with our various ensembles! Grade 12 Steel Band also played the first Martin Luther King Celebration, a tradition now at WHCI. It was at Roy Thompson Hall with "In Essence"

WHCI Feeder Schools Concerts 2004

In 2004, WHCI Music Department played three successive days of music concerts for our feeder schools. The concert bands and steel bands took turns playing. Since we were playing for Grade 8's, we used as many of our 9's and 10's to play, and let the Motown band take a break. Can you find yourself in the audience? : )

WHCI Steel Band: Campbell's Event Feb 2004

WHCI Steel Bands play outside at Yonge and Bloor Streets for two separate events in February 2004. Great gig, the students played very well. First outdoor gig in winter. Campbell's loaned us the fleece jackets and provided free soup all day long, and a nice honourarium for our Ohio Trip in May 2004!
