2008_06_16_Main_Salmon_River_OAC_Trip

Cana and I joined the ISU OAC for a trip down the Main Salmon River through the Frank Church Wilderness of No Return. Water levels were over 5' and rising when we put-in and over 7.5' when we took out. Big flows indeed, especially for my first time rowing a boat on whitewater. Thanks so much to all participants who gave such great advice!

Images from time spent in the Squirrel River drainage. After assisting Nova Gold with their Sediment sampling strategy, they returned the favor by offering helicopter time for my research into river geometry and scaling in Arctic river systems.

Images of field surveys done at the thinning neck of the Baldwin Peninsula. The eventual breach of the peninsula will lead to dramatic changes in local navigation, fish migration routes and delta growth on the Noatak River.

AK_2007_Selawik_River_Slump

US Fish and Wildlife Service was generous to fly Neil and myself to this large slump in exchange for our work surveying the slump. 7000 surveyed locations were used to create a 3-D model of the slump for measuring past and future sediment delivery. Since 2004, when the slum initiated, 350,000 m3 of glacial till have been delivered from the slump the the river and alluvial fan. I can't wait to go back next year and learn how it is growing.

These images come from a short jaunt into the lower Noatak River. Channels were surveyed for knickpoints and hydraulic geometry. They are close enought to Kotzebue that they would make great long term monitering sites.
