Thursday - South on the Slick Rock Trail from west shore of Lake Alpine, 7N17 past Utica Reservoir, to Spicer Reservoir, 7N01 to Elephant Rock Lake, and return on Spicer Reservoir Road (one of the sweetest paved hidden gems in the Sierras) & Hwy-4.

Last granite obstacle on the Slick Rock Trail
We found a new trail that winds its way a little further south and crosses the North Fork of the Stanislaus River
The river was only 2-ft. deep and then the trail led us to ...
A catfish escapes across the dam!
The small lake behind the dam
The rock face above the road to the dam required a little drilling
The Slick Rock Trail bridge across the Stanislaus River
This area was a summer resort in the Roaring '20s!
A large group camped in the trees
Geese in the slick-rock Utica Lake
Chris LIKES it here!
Decisions, decisions ...

Racing in Bear Valley?!?
Friday we explored most of the side roads & trails of Hwy-4 east of Lake Alpine. Pacific Valley, Highlands Lakes, Wolf Creek, and Silver Hills Roads.
Someone needs a spankin'!

The waterfall behind cabin # 3 is down to a trickle
The swimmin' pools below the falls
For perspective, the pools are about 20 feet below where I'm standing
Chris, the rock climber, sez this is a COOL place!
More rocks!
Smoke was in the air on Friday

The crags of Raymond Peak in the smoky background
We ate lunch in the shade at Wolf Creek Meadow, next to a branch of the creek.
We rode 2/3s of this great old trail off Wolf Creek Rd. until we came to this downed tree.
Silver Hills Rd. led us to many other roads and trails in that area.
A Catfish following a Catfish across the high desert meadow?!?
Saturday - Corral Hollow jeep trail (7A), 7E jeep & ATV trail, 6H, 6J, and several un-marked ATV trails across the ridge to Calaveras Dome for lunch. Then Forest roads 7N19, 7N09, 7N28, & 7N08 down to the Mokelumne river for a cool splash. Returned on 7N08, 7N28, 7N09, & Hwy-4.
Artyom likes to exercise by picking up his 640ADV and pushing it up hills at high elevation. Later, we lowered his tire pressures to 15psi. D'OH!!!

A little less smoke in the air today

The meadow & cabin in Bear Trap Basin
The cabin is stocked with food & wood for the wood stove. Its available for camping on a 1st-come/1st-serve basis.
Chris wants to stay at the cabin next time!
Beautiful view across the meadow
A smoky view of the Mokelumne River canyon east of Salt Springs Reservoir
Salt Springs Reservoir can be seen from the end of trail 6J
Did you see a trail around here?
As Catfish turns the WR around to go back up a too-steep downhill, Artyom entertains the photographer
Catfish rides back up the hill being chased by the crazed Artyom MONSTER!!!
After hiking down to the Calaveras Dome, Artyom remembered it was his birthday!

A creek flows into the Mokelumne River where we stop for a cool-splashing break!
Gino rode out Spicer Reservoir Road to Spicer, and 7N01 to Elephant Rock Lake. The Elephant Rock is doing a poor job of hiding behind the trees to the right.
Gino liked the highly-recommended CA-26 (from CA-49 to CA-88) so much, he "did the triple" so he could continue up CA-88. Joanne would have been PROUD!
A frizzy-headed Catfish, after his swim in the lake, enjoying some chips & salsa before dinner.
Sunday - Top of Hwy-89 and Monitor Pass
Good thing they don't let bicycles on these trails!
We did NOT ride these trails, as far as YOU know ...
This was a lone hill of large shale rocks
The valley we just came across
A wreck becomes a target and ...
a vehicle for social commentary!
Another gorgeous area with a too-smoky view
The old fire lookout tower and communications center on top of Leviathan Peak (8967 ft.)
We parked up here for lunch

Sometimes they just dead end
But the views from the top are always worth the effort

Off a side road near Big Springs, we found a strange camp area
This cool old tree is in the middle of this "improved" camp area
Many randomly-dispersed rock walls in the meadows
Rain falls at Mosquito Lake as we are returning to camp
Monday - We headed up to Round Valley above the ski resort, and back towards Corral Hollow OHV area to explore many trails we missed on Saturday

Utica & Union Reservoirs are in the distance, while Lake Alpine hides behind Catfish
Yes, that is a Real(tm) singletrack trail thru the meadow
It gets narrower yet as we continue down the coolest singletrack trail in the area
Towards the end of this singletrack, it climbs a hill with very soft, loose soil. I almost made it to the top.
A large, flat strategically-placed rock and Yamaha THRUST got me the rest of the way up!
And OFF he GOES!
Another view from the 7E ATV trail
This singletrack ended for us with another downed tree across the trail. The bypass was steep and deep in forest powder. We feared if we descended, we'd never get back up it if necessary.
Tasty singletrack thru the woods!
Sunday's rain didn't fall in this area!
I pick the STUPIDEST places to fall over!
