Bowers Hollow Ozark Society Hike

Terry Fredrick led us on a great hike to Bowers Hollow and Hawk Hollow in the Upper Buffalo Wilderness area. We followed old roads and trails most of the way, and then bushwhacked down into the base of Bowers Hollow waterfall (56') for lunch. After climbing out of Bowers Hollow we hiked over to Upper and Lower McClure Falls. A wonderful rim trail then led us to Hawk Hollow, where Upper and Lower Ken Smith Falls are located.The point above upper Ken Smith Falls sits on a tall bluff with an excellent view of the Upper Buffalo River valley.

Buffalo River Trail building by Ozark Society

Master Trailbuilder Ken Smith led 20 volunteer workers clearing a flagged line for a new section of the Buffalo River Trail near river mile 108 between Gilbert and Maumee North, north of Marshal. The workforce consisted of 8 OSHC members, and twelve other trail builders, including eight from Russellville HS. We removed logs and limbs along the trail line and cut shrubs and small trees so that the line was visible. We were armed with an assortment of chain saws, hand saws, lopers, clippers, shovels, and mattocks. We had lunch at the junction of Little Rocky Creek and Scott Creek. After lunch we cleared a final section of trail up a steep slope, and came to a Hawsbill Crag type of lookout with a beautiful view of the Buffalo River.

Spirit Creek Falls Ozark Society Hike

Brenda Brown celebrated her birthday by leading us on a wonderful hike to Spirits Creek on the Ozark Highland Trail. We saw at least six waterfalls that were flowing high with the recent rains. We saw Robinson Falls, which is named after Bob Robinson, who joined us on the hike.

Terry Fredrick led us on a great hike down into the amazing Beech Hurricane Creek. We hiked down 900 feet to the creek, and saw numerous waterfalls and unique canyons.

Mountain Fork Creek Ozark Society Hike

JB Clark led us on a spectacular hike on Mountain Fork Creek. We went down the hill from Cherry Bend on Highway 23 to Mountain Fork Creek, and then hiked down the creek bed for several miles. We saw at least 5 named waterfalls, and many unnamed waterfalls and creeks. We then had a steep hike back up to the highway.

Ozark Society Devil's Canyon Bush Whack

JB Clark led us on a wonderful hike in Devil's Canyon near Fern, AR. We hiked around the top of an impressive bluff, and then descended through a narrow bear crack to the first stream. After exploring a waterfall in this stream, we climbed over a ridge and descended into the main Devil's Canyon stream and went downstream to an impressive 63 foot waterfall. We had lunch near the confluence of several streams, and then hiked upstream through an massive boulderfield to the bear crack. The weather was beautiful, and we saw numerous waterfalls and cascades.

Ozark Society Hawksbill Crag and Whitaker Creek Bushwhack

Rodger led hikers on a great bushwhack down Whitaker Creek and back up to Hawksbill Crag. We saw numerous waterfalls, including Amber Falls, Compton Double Falls, Thousand Kisses Falls, anc Mule Trail Falls. The weather was perfect, and the creeks were running.

Ozark Society Hike to Round Rocks in Pine Hollow on the Upper Buffalo

Bob Cross led 16 hikers on a wonderful hike to see the mysterious round rocks in Pine Hollow in the Upper Buffalo Wilderness. We started at the Mossville church, and then walked downhill and down a steep cut in the bluff. The round rocks were imbedded in the larger rocks like cannonballs. We then hiked along the bottom of the bluff to see two other waterfalls.

Ozark Society Upper Buffalo Wilderness Hike

Ron Foldvary led us on a wonderful hike in the upper Buffalo wilderness area. We started at the Buffalo River Trail Boxley Trailhead and the Whiteley homestead. We visited the Whiteley family cemetary, and the foundations of an old school and church. We then climbed up a steep watershed to a spectacular V-shaped hollow and watefall. After lunch, we hiked back down to the Hedges homestead, and back along the Buffalo River to the trailhead.

Ozark Society Spy Rock Hike

Bob Cross led us on a wonderful hike from Redding campground on the Mulberry River up to Spy Rock. We hiked 7.6 miles with a total elevation gain and loss of 900 feet. We hiked up to Spy Rock in cool temperatures through a light drizzle, a welcome relief from the heat of the summer. There were wonderfull fall flowers, including some yellow ones that need to be identified. The view from Spy Rock was great, with some low fog still lying in the Mulberry valley. On the trail back we passed some dry waterfalls that would be great in the spring.

Chemistry Canoe Trip on Buffalo River from Steele Creek to Kyles Landing 5-16-2011

18 hardy members of the UA Chemistry department had a great canoe trip on the Buffalo River from Steele Creek to Kyles Landing. The weather was perfect, and the water level was good, with 26" below the Ponca low water bridge. We had lunch on the gravel bar right across from Big Bluff and the Goat Trail. Some of us actually swam at Jim Bluff, but the water was very cold. We then hiked up to Hemmed-in-Hollow, the highest waterfall between the Appalatians and the Rocky Mountains at 210 feet. Hell's Half Acre and Gray Rock were very exciting. Check out the pictures of Josh and Jiang canoeing underwater.

Ozark Society Canoe Trip on the Buffalo River

J.B. Clark led us on a canoe trip on the Buffalo River from Kyles Landing to Ozark Campground, a distance of about 11 miles. Both the weather and water level were perfect. There were massive bluffs, and great runs through the rapids. This stretch of river was much less crowded than the Ponca to Kyles Landing stretch, even though it was a Saturday. Rodger discovered a beautiful stream flowing into the Buffalo shortly above Ozark. When we reached Ozark campground, we had a wonderful dinner prepared by Gene Milus, his wife Monica, and others. We were joined by the intrepid hikers who completed the Ozark River Classic hike of 23 miles from Ponca low water bridge to Ozark. A third group who hiked from Erbie to Ozark also joined us. Many thanks to Gene and Monica for preparing the dinner, and to Julian Clark, Bob Cross, Terry Fredrick, Mike Adelman and many others who led and organized the events.

Devils Canyon Ozark Society Bushwhack

JB Clark led 16 Ozark Society Hikers into Devil's Canyon near Fern, AR. We walked along spectacular bluffs before descending through a "bear crack" down to the first waterfall. We then climbed over a hill to another stream where we had lunch at Devil's Canyon Waterfall. This is a spectacular 40 foot waterfall. We encountered numerous waterfall as we hiked downstream to the junction with the first stream, and then walked upstream through an incredibly rugged boulder field. Ozark Highlands Trail Cleanup: Fane Creek

Mike Adelman led us on a clean up of the Ozark Highlands Trail near Fane Creek. Numerous trees damaged in the ice storm have now fallen down across the trail. Terry Fredrick led a chain saw crew to clear the large trees from the trail, while the rest of us clear the green briar with clippers. Mike and David Sloan also add rocks to muddy and washed-out sections of the trail. We also explored the footings of an old railroad tressle that crossed a deep watershed above a 40 foot waterfall.

Ozark Society Bushwhack to Hurricane-Beech Creek

Terry Fredrick led Ozark Society hikers on a bushwhack from the top of the ridge on Highway 16 just east of Boston down a steep slope to Hurricane-Beech creek. This is an area where many different creeks join together, with waterfalls too numerous to mention. There were some amazing long bluffs undercut by the creek. The elevation loss and gain was 900 feet, and the long climb out got us hungry for snacks by the car.

Ozark Society Hike on Hemmed-in-Hollow Rim Trail

Bob Cross led 15 Ozark Society hikers on a wonderful hike from the Compton trailhead and then on a primitive trail around the rim of Hemmed-in-Hollow. The day started cold and windy, but once we were under way the weather was perfect. There were spectacular views from the bluffs all around the hollow, and down into the buffalo river. As Bob promised, the hike was not for those with fear of heights, as we were walking along a primitive trail close to the edge of the bluff. When we reached the end of the bluff line, Bob led us down a chute and through the woods to the Buffalo river. We then followed the well-maintained Compton trail back up to the trailhead, a hard climb of 1300 feet.

Foxes at Play

A family of foxes has been hanging around our yard all Spring. We first saw Mom and Pop fox in the early Spring hunting mice, and they even brought the mice up on our deck to eat. Then one April night our cat went berserk and we saw two young fox kits right outside the window door on our deck drinking out of the cat's water bowl. Yesterday, the whole family was playing in our yard for over half an hour. They were chasing each other, wrestling, pouncing, and generally practicing to kill other animals. The parents were clearly teaching the kits how to hunt and fight. I hope our cat steers clear of them.

Lois Geren and UA Chemistry 1976 - 2010

Lois Geren joined the University of Arkansas Department of Chemistry in 1977, and received her Ph.D. in 1981. She was appointed Postdoctral Research Associate from 1982 to 1999 and Research Assistant Professor from 1999 to the present. This album show photographs of Lois and her students and colleagues canoeing on the Buffalo, Mulberry, Illinois and Elk rivers, and enjoying the Ozarks.

Chemistry Buffalo River Canoe Trip

The annual Chemistry Department canoe trip was held on the Buffalo River from Ponca to Kyle's landing. 22 hardy souls braved a raging thunderstorm, uncountable tipovers, and many other challenges to successfully navigate the river. The thunderstorm was spectacular, with the thunder ricocheting off the bluffs up and down the river. The trees and ferns were unusually lush, and the Catalpa trees on the river were in full bloom. Hemmed-in-Hollow was spectabular, with a good waterfall from the recent rains. Hell's Half Acre was booming, and Gray Rock was a terror. We all arrived safe and sound at Kyle's Landing.

Ozark Society Leatherwood Creek Bushwhack

Terry Fredrick and Ron Foldvary led us on two hikes in Leatherwood Creek. We all set out in a downpour from the Ponca low water bridge, and hiked up the creek to a wonderfull box canyon and bluff shelter. The heavy rain in the days before resulted in spectacular waterfalls on the creek and coming in from both sides. Terry led one group up a steep scramble to one of the highest bluffs in the Ozarks, and then up the "Chimney" to the top of the bluff. Ron led the other group back along the creek to the bridge. Alice Andrews graciously invited us to her home in Boxley for a potluch picnic after the hike.

Ozark Society BRT Steele Creek to Kyles Landing Hike

Bob Cross led 17 hikers on an Ozark Society hike on the Buffalo River Trail from Steele Creek to Kyles Landing. The hike was a distance of 7.9 miles with a the total elevation gain of over 1000 feet. Most of the trail is in the Ponca Wilderness and it is arguably the most scenic part of the BRT with features such as a slick rock canyon, an old homestead, and views of the magnificent bluffs across the Buffalo. At the end of the hike we met up with the intrepid athletes who hiked the Ozark Society Classic, 21 Miles from the Boxley Trailhead to Kyles Landing on the Buffalo River Trail.

Ozark Society Hike to Fish Trap Hollow

Terry Fredrick led 11 hikers on a bushwhack from Compton trailhead down into Fish Trap Hollow and then down Fish Trap Creek to the Buffalo River. Terry delivered everything he promised, including a 1500 foot elevation descent and ascent, numerous wet crossings, scrambling, ticks, chiggers, and one water moccasin snake. The first two hours we scrambled down steep hillsides through poison ivey in the rain. The sun came out just as we reached the top of Fish Trap Hollow for a glorious view. The wild azalea and columbine were in full bloom.

Hemmed-in-Hollow

Eunice and I hiked down to Hemmed-in-Hollow on the Compton trail. The redbuds and dogwoods were in full bloom, as were many other early wildflowers. Hemmed-in-Hollow itself was spectacular, with many redbud trees near the falls in bloom.

Ozark Highlands Trail Hike: Ragtown Road to Fane Creek

Mike Adelman led Ozark Society hikers on a stretch of the Ozark Highland Trail maintained by the Highland Chapter. It goes through one of the most attractive portions of the Ozarks, with much of the trail running downhill on the road bed of the abandoned Black Mountain & Eastern railroad. Remains of old trestle footings and cuts through hillsides are evidence of the Ozark's railroad heritage, crossing hollows where rugged stream beds tumble down the hillsides. Rain the day before caused Fane Creek to rise, requiring an extra bushwhack to avoid a deep creek crossing. The weather was perfect, with early morning fog in the valleys. The early wildflowers were just beginning to bloom.

Ozark Society Hike in Indian Creek

Terry Fredrick led 41 Ozark Society hikers from Kyles Landing on the Buffalo River up the Indian Creek watershed. Terry, Roger and others rigged the ropes that allowed us to climb to some of the most spectacular scenery in Arkansas, including Arkansas Cave, the Eye of the Needle, and dozens of waterfalls. Early wildflowers were just beginning to bloom. The skies turned perfectly clear for most of the day, although those of us taking taking pictures on the way out were caught in a hail storm.

Terry Fredrick led us to two different areas of the Ozark National Forest. We first went to Buzzards Roost and the longest natural bridge in the state with fantastic rock formations.. We then hiked into the Grotto, with an unbelievable bluff shelter and waterfall.

Sally Stone led the Ozark Society on two of the most famous trails in the upper Buffalo region. There are great waterfalls and bluffs at Lost Valley, as well as a cave with a waterfall deep inside. It was also a great day to visit Hawksbill Crag.

San Francisco

Our research group attended the Biophysical Society Conference in San Francisco. On Monday, Sany Rajagukguk led us on a visit to Golden Gate Park where we saw the Botanical Garden. We then took a bus to the Veterans Administration Hospital, where Sany is a postdoc, and had a wonderful walk down to the Ocean at Lands End and Cliff House. Jeff, Chris, and Jeremy waded out on the beach to an island. On Thursday, Eunice and I walked across the Golden Gate Bridge and then walked along the Coastal Trail and down to Marshall's Beach, which we had to ourselves. We then continued along the Coastal Trail to Baker Beach, Mile Rock Beach, Lands End, and finally Sutra Baths, where we got some good pictures of pelicans. After all that walking, we enjoyed a dinner at Cliff House watching the ocean. On Friday, we went to the King Tut exhibition, as it was raining heavily, and then had dinner at "The Stinking Rose" restaurant.

Ozark Society Kings River Falls and Beyond Bushwhack

Terry Fredrick led the Ozark Society Highlands Chapter on a Kings River Falls and Beyond Bushwhack. There were spectacular icicles on the bluffs. We also saw the Williams family historic home, barn, and cemetary, as well as a ruined marijuana growers cabin up on a remote bluff. We had lunch on a high bluff with a spectacular view of the Kings River Valley and Stone Jar Hollow.

Ozark Society Hike Buffalo River Trail from Boxely to Arrington Creek

Bob Cross led 17 hikers on the Buffalo River Trail from the Boxely trailhead to Arrington Creek, where we had lunch. Ten hikers then went on to Ponca (total of 11 miles) and seven re-traced there steps to Boxley (total of 7 miles). We saw deer and a real live armadillo. We also saw numerous elk in the Boxley valley, including new calves.

Ozark Society Fern Gully Bushwhack

Terry Fredrick led us on a bushwhack into the wilds of Fern Gulley. It was extremely lush, with incredible rock formations, streams, waterfalls, and wildflowers. I also got a horrific case of poison ivy.

Terry Fredrick led us on a 3-mile hike to Boen Gulf at the peak season for wildflowers and azaleas. We saw many beutiful waterfalls, ferns and wildflowers. After the hike we moved to Alice Andrews’s estate in the Boxley valley for our third annual end-of-spring-hiking-season picnic lunch

Ozark Society 2009 Kings River Falls and Beyond Bushwhack

Terry Fredrick led the Ozark Society Highlands Chapter on a Kings River Falls and Beyond Bushwhack. We saw the Williams family historic home, barn, and cemetary, as well as a ruined marijuana growers cabin up on a remote bluff. We had lunch on a high bluff with a spectacular view of the Kings River Valley and Stone Jar Hollow. When we got back to the cars it was snowing, and we had a slippery drive home.

UA Chemistry Canoe Trip on Mulberry River

UA Chemistry department faculty and students canoed the Mulberry River on a beautiful day in December after a large thunderstorm. The river was quite high, and the temperature was warm for December.
