I see these a lot on the edge of our valley below the mountains. I can't find where quail are actually in Montana, but this looks like a California Quail. Cute!

It was a hot day. The creeks and river waterflows are diminishing. It rained heavily the day before and even though the seasonal streams are drying up, there were a few new "puddles" in some of the draws where everyone and everything took advantage of the water.

2009 07.12 The Last Day - tying it all together

On the last morning, Gladys McKinney, Jennifer Bates, Kimberly Stevenot, Arvada Fisher, and Kathy Wallace talked with us about customs, materials, tools, designs, processes and much more. There are a lot of photos, but these baskets, etc are the real deal. What you saw us all create were fun and part of the process, but these photos show their art and function. So, enjoy!

Acorn Prep

Instructors were Kimberly Stevenot and Jennifer Bates (and everyone else). This was the most involved process of all. It began with talk of nutrition, gathering and storing. Then we learned to crack the acorn, clean it, grind it, sift it, leach the acorn meal, build the fire and heat the rocks, cook it in a basket, cool it in cold water, and finally use the mixture to make soup or other foods such as little cakes. Whew! It took a village to do this process.

2009 07.09-12 Rock Painting

Instructor was Fred Velasquez - We used four natural pigments, White, black, yellow and red to paint these rocks with designs, petroglyphs or pictographs.

Instructors were Gladys McKinney and Diane (sorry don't have her last name). I didn't get many photos of this event either. We actually accomplished two beautifully colored sashes. One small one and another larger one.

2009 07.09-12 Soaproot Brushes

Instructors were Gladys McKinney and Diane. Wavyleaf Soaproot http://www.fourdir.com/p_wavyleaf_soap_plant.htm Chlorogalum pomeridianum ETHNOBOTANIC USES The bulbs of the wavyleaf soaproot are used as soap, a durable adhesive, and fish poison. Fibers are used to make brushes. The bulb can also be eaten with sufficient preparation.

2009 07.09-12 Fiber-string making with milkweed or red alder

Instructors were Carson Bates, Fred Velesquez and guest Craig Bates. We used elderberry but fibers can also be made from milkweed and red alder. We used a stone to smooth the nodes, cracked the outer hard material, removed it and rubbed the inner material until it was clean an fiberous. Then it was woven or twisted into strands.

Includes menus, candid shots, food, PIT cooking of meat, a rainbow, and friends. The Chef and Kitchen staff were Stevenot family and friends. Excellent planning and preparation. Delicious food.

2009 07.10 North Fork of the Stanislaus River

These photos were taken just after dawn - about 6:20 am. http://www.publiclands.org/explore/site.php?plicstate=CA&id=7449 3900 foot elevation. 49 campsites near the North Fork of the Stanislaus River. Good fishing for wild brown and rainbow trout. Late season deer hunting. Nearby fishing, picnic/day use area, river shore trails, and whitewater boating launch. Campground is located on the site of an ancient Me-Wuk Indian village, within the Sourgrass Recreation Complex. Significant Native American artifacts such as grinding stones and middens have been preserved. Instructors were Fred Velasquez and Carson Bates. Guest instructor was Craig Bates. Digging sticks were very important tools. Sticks were gathered, chosen carefully, peeled, sharpened, and fire hardened.

Pasqueflower

Pulsatilla vulgaris (Pasque Flower, Common Pasque flower, Dane's Blood) belongs to the Buttercup family (Ranunculaceae), native to western, central and southern Europe. Pasqueflower is a perennial forb 4 to 12 inches tall. Flowering begins in April or May when flower stalks emerge before the leaves expand. Flowers are tulip-like, 1 to 2 inches long, varying in color from nearly white to pinkish-violet. Leaves are densely silky when young, mostly basal, and dissected into many, narrow, linear divisions. As achenes ripen in a cluster, they are tipped with long, feathery beaks. It grows to 15-30 cm high and when it is fruit-bearing up to 40 cm. The roots go deep into the soil (to 1 m). The finely-dissected leaves are arranged in a rosette and appear with the bell-shaped flower in early spring.

Freda our new Chesapeake puppy

We picked Freda up April 11 when she was 7 weeks old (BD 2/20/09) from Florence Wells in Belgrade, MT. Freda has been the best puppy ever. She slept much of the way home - about a 5 hour trip with a few stops. The next day we took her on a river float. She is getting her schedule down, has figured out that the cats don't want much to do with her and is curious about the chickens. She is learning to come, getting house broken and falling in love with Chickadee Lane. We love her.

Goshawk

This Goshawk has found a good dining spot at my chicken coop and run. I actually am keeping the chickens in, but had too many rooster. My large Rhode Island Red rooster died of old age and I put it out in the aspens to see if the Goshawk ate carrion chickens as well as fresh chickens. IT DID. It spent about 3 days working on the carcass. It would drag it under cover to eat and then revisited until it finished the chicken. Very interesting. What took the longest was getting defeathering the chicken. I don't know why, but it took all the feathers off before it got into the entrails. My sent didn't bother the hawk at all.

Bear Creek Overlook Ski, March 12

We drove up a Forest Service road, parked, and then skied/climbed further up the road system. Going down, we used a few ridges to make some turns. It was a beautiful day.
